warranty work "rules"

Previously I was the service manager at a small Chev. dealership in a smaller town. I had a setup with the service manager of the nearest GMC dealer(55 miles away). I would call him if I had a customer with a GMC and he would sublet the repair to me. It worked well, as he was also a Pontiac/Buick dealer, and we sold a lot of program cars that still had factory warranty remaining. Not saying this was exactly koshur(sp?) but we got paid. can any gm dealer do warranty work on a chevy truck? in my town, there’s a chevy dealer about 3 miles away from a pontiac/gmc dealer. i don’t like dealing with the chevy dealer’s service dept. because they argue about everything. the pontiac/gmc dealer has told me in the past that i had to go to the chevy dealer for warranty work. is this true? -rob

It’s up to the dealer if they want to do warranty work or not. GM doesn’t require any dealer to work on a vehicle, however, it is not in the best interest of a dealer to refuse work if they are equipped to do it as it tarnishes the reputation. My guess is that if the Pontiac/GMC store doesn’t want your business, you wouldn’t be satisfied with them anyway. I’d go out of town if the Chevy store isn’t treating you well. Ken Considering after purchase service should be a major factor in determining who you buy from in the first place.

so conceivably, if every gm dealer in my state refused to do warranty work, i’d be SOL? No, actually GM will not pay a Chevy dealer to do warranty work on a GMC and vice versa. The only time a Chevy dealer can warranty something on a GMC is if it’s covered under an extended warranty such as GMPP.
