Did you torque the pan bolts to specs? You know they are torqued correctly when they seem really loose. I *believe* it’s about 14 ft lbs. If you tighten them too much, the pan will leak like mad. It does sound like bigger problems inside the trans though. Valve covers too, the #1 reason for them leaking is because the bolts were overtightened. They are basically supposed to be torqued a little more than hand tight. Yes, the TH 350 can hold up to towing, but you should add an aftermarket trans cooler, and change the fluid much more often than the service manual says. Much like you would if you plowed snow with the truck. Heat is the killer of transmisions, and man does towing generate heat! ~Chuck www.chuckschevytruckpages.com Check out my 73-87 Chevy Truck pages, all C/K models, lots of tech.Links. www.chuckschevytruckpages.com Chuck’s Chevy Truck Pages

I have a 77 suburban 4×4 with a 454 and a 350 trans. I only use it to tow my boat (I think about 4,000 lbs) After the first trip, it began leaking trans fluid badly out of the rear of the trans. It appears to come out between the pan and the trans. The weird thing is that it only leaks in reverse. It can tow forward with no problem- no leak but reverse makes it leak (towing or not). I havent dropped the pan yet. Does this sound like bad trouble? It shifts great (as long as their is still fluid in it) Can the 350 trans hold up for towing? Any advice is greatly appreciated! —
