Tire pressure S10 1988???

Question:

I had 245/75/16 firestones on my 2001 k1500 Z71 silverado.  I almost immediately changed to BFG All Terrain KOs, 265/75/16.  I just checked my air pressure yesterday and all tires were at 40psi.  The door jamb recommends 50, so I inflated them all, and IT’S TOTALLY AMAZING the difference.  A much smoother ride.  Thanks for the help. -Pat – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Ok folks…lets set the records straight about tire pressure.  1st off  the >sidewall markings have NOTHING to do with the recommended tire pressure for >a particular vehicle.  They simply state the tires MAX load carrying at the >tires MAX tire pressure.  So only of you are carrying that much weight >pressure to find and document the SWEET SPOT is ludicrous considering most >tire gauges read in 2 psi increments.  3rd  4 wd vehicles DO NO and ARE NOT >affected by change in tire pressure, unless you have 1 tire at MAX and 1 >tire at FLAT.  If that were the case, there would be an awful lot of ring >and pinions stripped out because 95% of the public hasn’t checked their tire >pressure in like a year.  To find your tire’s RECOMMENDED air pressure is >simple, if the sticker is missing, simply contact a local tire retailer and >they will be able to provide you with this.  The specs for a 1988 Chevy/GMC >S/T class truck running a P235/75R15 M/S tire is 28psi front and 32 psi >rear.

Response:

The sticker is also missing on my truck. The manual says 35 PSI max. Is that the max. pressure for at loaded truck? Because mine is almost never loaded. Lars Frederiksen

Response:

The tire pressure depends on the tire/load combinations. For the dunlops I had, Dunlop recommended 35, a harsh ride. I found 32-33 just right. Anything less the side wall flex gave a mushy ride. Inflation pressures will also affect mileage.  And if you have 4  wheel drive, you should be sure that all wheels have the same ride height. Just measure each wheel height with a ruler. And document your findings once you found the ’sweet’ spot.
