Steering Problems

Question:

Have had similar experience with a ‘97 K2500.  Possibly related to the speed-variable assist. JL

For variable-rate steering.  I recall this being a common failure, seems it could pose a safety threat and should be included in an NHTSA recall… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->>Have ‘99 K1500 Suburban 4×4 that has developed a sudden jerk in the > steering >>wheel when making right hand turns (doesn’t seem to matter what the > speed >>is).  Very annoying and doesn’t happen all the time – never occurs > when >>making left hand turn.  The wheel literally jumps to the right and at >>highway speeds causes the truck to veer pretty sharply if you don’t > correct >>back to the left.  I had 97 K1500 P/U that had the same problems, but > traded >>it in before having it fixed.  Surely someone out there has > experienced >>this.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. >Steering wheel position sensor is bad. > What exactly is a steering wheel position sensor?  And why is it on > there if it can fail and make your truck veer to the side?

It’s a sensor in the base of the steering column for the EVO(electronic variable oriface) steering system. You basically get full assist momentarily in a situation where minimal assist is required. <snipped and moved wher it belongs for ease of conversation.> >For variable-rate steering.  I recall this being a common failure, seems >it could pose a safety threat and should be included in an NHTSA recall…

I’ve never actually heard of anyone having a wreck when this happens. I have, however changed a shitload of the sensors, but no recall, just a tsb.

Response:

Thanks all for the input….I checked the NHTSA website and there are numerous complaints about similar steering problems.  Many mention replacing the steering sensor.  Guess I’ll start there.  Could you the average joe replace the sensor or is it something that the dealers should do? Richard

Yup… Just replaced my steering sensor last month on my 97 GMC PU. The dealer cost to replace it was $180, even though the part is only $40 by itself.

What exactly is a steering wheel position sensor?  And why is it on there if it can fail and make your truck veer to the side?

Steering wheel position sensor is bad.

Response:

Have ‘99 K1500 Suburban 4×4 that has developed a sudden jerk in the steering wheel when making right hand turns (doesn’t seem to matter what the speed is).  Very annoying and doesn’t happen all the time – never occurs when making left hand turn.  The wheel literally jumps to the right and at highway speeds causes the truck to veer pretty sharply if you don’t correct back to the left.  I had 97 K1500 P/U that had the same problems, but traded it in before having it fixed.  Surely someone out there has experienced this.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Richard
