Service Engine soon
Question:
Does anyone know what pins to short out on a 98 GMC K1500 in order to diagnose the service engine soon light? Many thanks. Richard
Response:
According to a Haynes book I have (don’t put much faith in it), you must use a scan tool to get a readout for ‘96 and newer trucks. My Helm book also mentions using a scan tool. Here is the pin layout in any case if you can make some use out of it. Cavity 1 Not Used 2 Serial Data Class 2 3 Not Used 4 Ground 5 Ground 6 Not Used 7 Not Used 8 Keyless Entry Program Enable Signal 9 Serial Data Signal – UART 8192 Baud Primary 10 Not Used 11 Not Used 12 Diagnostic Signal – ABS 13 Transfer Case Control Module Diagnostic Enable 14 E And C Diagnostic Signal 15 Not Used 16 Battery Fused Output Cavities 1 thourgh 8 are on the top row of the Data Link connector oriented Left to Right. Cavities 9 through 16 follow on the bottom row in the same manner. This pin readout came from my Helm book covering ‘97 pickups. Andy

I was told it can’t be done on my 98 GMC by a dealer. Must us a code reader.

The service engine soon light went out on it’s own… Could it possibly have something to do with the weather? It was shitty and rainy the day it went on, and the day after…. But when it turned nice again, the truck was back to normal. Any ideas??? Rich – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I bet its your egr valve.
