Hi I have a 1990 Cavalier Z24 with a 3.1 motor  and 5 speed trans. The car has 145000 miles on it and the service engine light is coming on occasionally. I am getting a 32 fault reading which I think is the egr valve. The car runs fine and since the egr valve is digital and expensive do you think I should replace it or just put up with the light. Thanks for the thoughts.

for about 15-25 bucks you can get a code book and connector that beeps out the codes and blinks at the same time from any wal-mart or kmart.  this isn’t as fancy as the dealers, but will tell you what errors your computer has in it.  you can also clear these codes and see if it comes back to ensure it wasn’t a glitch.  the book also gives you complete instructions on how to use it.  this device will be invalueable to you as there are very few people that can pin-point the problem without seeing it, hearing it, and testing it.  and if they can then they are too busy making big bucks to be here answering questions. always trust the knowledge you gain from reading and not someone else’s hunch.  knowledge is power.  it’s your money and time and i’ve found that listening to friends and family costs more money than if you had shelled out the money the auto shop asked for.  also never go to the dealer unless your insurance company or warrenty are paying the tab. dave.

After turning the engine off for a few minutes it was fine. The service engine light stayed on for a few more minutes. My local GM dealer said the never heard of one doing this but for $59.95 the would hook up the computer to see if they could find the problem. Any guesses as to the problem?
