Reset "Change Oil" Warning
Question:
It just makes you wanna smack the smile off the engineers at GMC. My Corvette is so easy, and this configuration is just a pain in the butt. The Message Center on the 2002 is not nearly as nice as the DIC on the Corvette. That should go into the suggestion box for 2003 GMC trucks – use the DIC from the Vette.
And the next thing out of their mouths would be: “What’s a ‘Corvette’?”
Response:
My wife drives a 99 Grand Am…..on the fuse cluster on the side of the dash (only accessible when the door is open) pull the cover off, press the big red reset button the way it sez in the manual and the light goes out. Something like hold it in til light starts flashing, let go, press again and light goes out. I had a buddy who was service manager at the local Pontiac dealer tell me the pedal pumping procedure…but I forgot it and he moved away… It just makes you wanna smack the smile off the engineers at GMC. On my 2000 z71 I turn to run, stomp gas 3 times, then the change oil light will come on turn key off, and its re-set.
Response:
I believe that is pretty much standard for GM as every GM car I have uses the same technique. Just make sure the key is in “RUN” and not the first notch “ON”.

I can relate to your problem. I’ve experienced the same thing in both my 2002 Silverado and 1998 Chevy Lumina. The trick, if there is one, is to be patience but persistent. It usually takes me 5 or 6 times to get it to reset. The patience part come in because you depress the accelerator three times in five seconds then wait for the change oil light to flash. If it doesn’t flash, turn the ignition to off and try again. I’ll admit my ankle is usually tired by the time I get it reset. just remember pumping the pedal more than three times doesn’t do any good. The computer is looking for a specific “event;” three times in five seconds no more no less.
2002 Suburban LT 1500 Does anyone know how to reset Change Oil change warning once the oil is changed? Owner’s manual says to turn key to “Run” without engine running and fully depress accelerator three times within five seconds. I’ve tried it numerous times without luck. Please advise.
Response:
What the manual says works. It just takes a few 100 tries. Last time it took me three days to get it reset. Put the key in, turn it to “on” and let all the pre-checks and lights do their thing. Then do the 3x in 5 sec thing.

My cousin’s car did that and they could never get it to go off. I took the dash cover off and pulled the damn light out. If you need a f**king light to tell you when to get your oil changed, you are too dumb to drive a car. The damn light in her car wouldn’t even come on at the right time. She could go almost 7,000 miles before the light would even come on. This is in a 2000 Grand Prix. — Tony Kimmell Normal, IL “I think that’s how Chicago got started. If you follow those directions correctly that should work; or you could discount your battery for 30 minutes or so, but then you lose you presets on your radio, etc.
