Rear speakers
Question:
FYI…it was recently posted that in order to replace the rear door speaker all one must do is remove the grill over the speaker. That is not correct. On my 97you must remove the whole door panel to replace the speaker. It is easy to do Do not attempt to pull out the grill or you will break it. No, it did not happen to me. FYI…the connector has a little tab on it. The tab is the positive side. Jenson’s don’t sound as good as factory speakers. They are brighter and more efficient but lack any base response. Bob

Aftermarket speakers usually never have as much bass as the original speakers. They will, of course, sound better overall but the factory speakers were designed to sound good in your specific door but not great. I’ve replaced factory paper speakers with VERY expensive aftermarkets and they’ve all lacked as much bass. But they sounded so much better. A subwoofer will be needed to augment any aftermarket speakers. I have always found this to be true. Tony – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –
Response:
They were refering to the 2 door (Sport) models. On those you need not pull of the door panel (well because there isn’t one….) but instead only need to remove the grill. btw Why on earth did you buy Jensons? Terrible speakers… try the Cerwin Vega or Pioneer 6×8’s and all your bass and more will return. Jason.

Sounds like you need a different brand. My Cerwin Vega’s have WAY more bass than the factory speakers did. And they don’t sounds all "muddy" when they produce it either. Jason.

I had the Jensons from my Bronco. I had some free time and wanted to see if it made a difference. It only took about 20 mins to do both speakers. The speakers that came out of the Expolorer were the exact same speaker as the ones that came out of my 89 Bronco. I don’t think Ford really has tuned speakers for each truck. Did anyone notice the cutout in the lower part of the door for another 6×8? I will save up some money and get some better speakers. Considering trading the truck in on a Nissan Crew Cab pickup. Thanks for the input on the speaker brands. Bob
Response:
Yup I saw that extra hole down there but unless you cut a grill hole I don’t think the sound will be that great. Do the EB and Limited’s have speakers there (part of the JBL Lux stereo maybe?) Jason.

Nope… 97 EB JBL system has a single speaker in each door and the sub-mid (Too small to be a sub woofer!). The lower part of the door panel isn’t really for a speaker… Just happens to look that way.
Response:
On (older?) 2-door models, there’s a pop-out grill in the sidewall trim panel for the rear speakers.

I’ve recently installed a new pair of front speakers. I noticed, before and also now, that the rear speakers seem to put out, I dunno, half the sound volume than the front. I fade all the way to the back, then to the front and theres just no comparison. I’m not sure I want to buy another pair of speakers if only a part of the sound goes to the back anyways? Is this similar to other peoples’ Explorers? (91′ 4dr 2wd)
Response:
I have a 91 explorer 2dr and the speakers are dead even, I would think that when you change speakers you should do all 4 because every speaker is different, even if you got the same speaker from the factory it would sound different. Every speaker or speaker sets that are used together under the same load in the same temp condition wear evenly, when you introduce a new set of speakers, they are tight crisp new , there magnits are strong the paper in the cones is still ridged and they haven’t been exposed to load, heat, bouncing!! I’m sure that you hear a real difference, get a 4 set of any type you want, or if the front ones are still new enough get another pair for the rear Good Luck Ton – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I’ve recently installed a new pair of front speakers. If its like my 95 or 96 at all, you have to pulol out the rear seat, then remove the rear armrests to get at the screws and clips to pull out those plastic panels. Its a breeze after that, sometimes you have to fiddle a bit with the plastic piece of the headliner above the rear window, but no big deal. I had my stereo in and out of both my 95 and 96 ext cabs, and stilll have to put it in my 99, which Im not looking forward to. Gonna require a — Darren 97 RMK 700 http://members.xoom.com/RMK700/

I agree. I’m about the same size and when I get in my friend’s I adjust the seat to where I have enough room but feel nice and planted in it. Just have to get the right combination on the lumbar, reclining, and sliding levers. People shorter than me have said theres not enough head room. I guess it depends on how you’re built. >i personally think the rear seats in a Lude are for insurance breaks only. >hehe
The back seats are only for your worst enemies.

I drive a ‘96 Honda Civic Ex.One of my rear speakers is busted I guess, since there’s distortion. Can anybody point me to a site where they show how to remove the rear speakers?Or maybe someone in here can explain how to do it?Please any help would be greatly apreciated.
Response:
If its anything like my 96 Lude all you have to do is climb in the trunk and remove the bolts that hold the grill down and then unscrew the screws that hold the speaker in place from above. unhook wires and viola! since they are the same year its probably pretty similar procedure. if only the mids in the doors were that easy…..im going to have a time trying to fit some Nakamichi’s in there. the mounting depth is a little deeper than stock so modifications here i come! hope that helps Chris

I’m pretty sure that you’ll have to remove the rear shelf to access the rear speakers. For that, you’ll have to remove the rear seat back sides (one bolt each, hidden in the side of the rear seat cussion, near the door)… If you look for it, you’ll find it. THen you’ll have to take the shelf out. (nplug stop lamp, etc.). It’s held by a number of clips, make sure you don’t break them. (not sure, but it may also have a couple of screws…) You may also need to remode the trim from the side pillars… Again, clips… Good luck! Got questions? Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. I had two Accords and NEVER had to remove the seat to change speakers. I believe the other resonse is correct. I just bought a Civic CX that comes equipped with only two front speakers. Now I hear that the wiring for the back speakers is already there so I would basically just have to plug in my set of speakers in the back. Is that true? Can anyone tell me more precisely how to do that?

$25 for the OEM speakers? I wouldn’t give 25 drachmas for those pieces of crap. You can get some much better speakers from somewhere else for 50 or 60 bucks a pair (if you get them through Crutchfield, they give you a wiring harness with the speakers so installation is as basic as it can get). What do you mean by "$25 a set 50watt?" If you means those OEM speakers handle that much power, I think you’re mistaken.
