Rear-end gears in 01' 1500HD

Question:

Does anyone have an info about changing the rear-end gears to a higher speed in the new 1500HD’s?? I believe it is currently a 3.73. Mike

Response:

You can change gears on any rig at a lot of high-end high-performance shops.  Lot’s of ‘em advertise this job in used car journals/papers. Don’t bother doing it yourself unless you’re a mechanic, which I assume you’re not.  If the alignment is even slightly off, and the contact patch of the teeth are at some slightly weird angle, it will lead to early failure, not to mention noise, and weird driveability. When you say "higher" I assume you mean numerically higher (I.e., 4.10)? That would really be "lower" gearing. Also, I’ve never heard of a heavy-duty 1/2 ton.  Do you mean 2500? -Freddy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Does anyone have an info about changing the rear-end > gears to a higher speed in the new 1500HD’s?? > I believe it is currently a 3.73. > Mike

Response:

Freddy,             When I say "higher" I mean higher speed or lower numerically, like going from a 3.73 to a 3.55. I’m trying to improve gas mileage. It’s not a 2500, it’s a 2001 1500HD Crew Cab. I just got it 2 weeks ago.

Response:

The 1500HD is a crew cab truck on a 2500 platform with a 6.0 vortec engine. It has a higher tow rating than a standard 1500 series ,somewhere close to a regular 2500 but not near as much as a 2500HD.  Its just a marketing tool used by GM at this point sort of like what Ford does with the Super Crew to make it stand out from the others. Also I might add that the GMC version of the 1500HD is not labeled as such.

The 1500HD is the Club Cab (i.e. four real doors) with the 1500 badging, but the 2500LD engine, 2500LD GVWR (8,600 lbs), and the 2500LD auto trans. Andrew

I hear GM is going to phase out the 2500Light duty partly to the recent addition of the 2500HD.  I believe Ford did something similar when it introduced the "Super Fruity"… err… I mean "Duty" line.  Since the 1500HD has the powertrain and ratings of the 2500LD, and the 2500HD offers an ex-cab or club cab, there may be no cost effective reason to keep it. Personally I’d rather them keep the 2500LD, because it offers the manual trans(1500HD only offers the auto), numerically lower rear end ratio(3.73 vs 4.10 on 2500HD) and it is 3" lower than its 2500HD counterpart, which all translate into higher MPG potential. But… what ya gonna do??? Andrew

Response:

if you could live with having the better fuel economy in 2wd only, you could get an external overdrive unit. you can see ads for them in sport truck and some other magazines. they are built to handle 1000 hp so it could be an option… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Freddy, >             When I say "higher" I mean higher speed or lower > numerically, like going from a 3.73 to a 3.55. That mpg would be a pain if you’ve got a short bed too.  26 gallons dooesn’t got very far with those numbers. Andrew

Response:

yep, it’s short, and it doesn’t
