Question about new style Silverado HD

Question:

according to a recent tire test in one of the 4wheel drive magazines. a 1500hd or 2500hd will fit 33-12.50-16 by simply raising the front end around an inch with the torsion bars. they say there will be no rubbing even in extreme driving. also just put on 33" tires on a 1500 gmc with i think a 5.3 and it lost some power but not that bad , still drove very good and seemed to have plenty of power. — Thank You, Zoom Motorsports

I’ve considered buying a used 2500 HD.  Ideally, a Duramax would be best for me, but if I can buy it right, then a gasser would get me by for a while. Probably looking at a 6 liter, 4.10 gears auto if I can get my hands on this one.  Has anyone in this group put on a set of tires other than stock.  I will have a need to run with 33×12.50×16.5 tires and don’t really want to lift one again to do so.  I know the height of the truck will work, but I am concerned with the clearance at the bumper and rear of the front fender. Also, I have heard of problems with other tire sizes when stock are replaced.  Can anyone verify this and what those problems are. Thanks in advance, Snowman

Response:

Snowman, I have a 2000 Suburban 2500 with the 6 liter engine and the 4.10 gears. I din’t know the weight difference to the truck, but I’m not that happy about engine performance. I have a heavy trailer, and it has to work hard pulling even the empty trailer. If I could have gotten the 8 Liter at that time, I would have done that. A friend of mine traded his 99 2500 6 liter against a 2002 2500HD with the Allison transmission. He is a lot happier with that one. He thinks, that the 6 liter lost a lot of power in the sluggish transmission. He has a huge gooseneck horsetrailer to pull. Take that for what its worth – I don’t know if something would be different with your purchase because of either it being a HD version, or if something has improved between our models (‘99 and ‘00) and the 2002 model year.
