Idler pully
Question:
Does anyone know how to stop the idler pully from squealing on a 2000 gmc 5.3. It does not squeal as bad when it gets warmed up but it’s still there. I wasn’t sure if it could be disassembled or if it has to be replaced.

hello, it has been my experience that the whole pulley has to be replaced. i have a 1989 C1500 4.3 and have replaced 4 of them since i bought the truck in ‘92. it’s a snap on my truck, take off the belt, and one bolt holds it on. if you are talking about the belt tensioner pulley, it is the same thing, just remember that there is a little nipple on the back of the pulley that needs to be lined up correctly in a hole on the mounting plate, if you don’t get it right, it will easily break off. i found that one out the hard way. for my truck, the idler was about $15 US and the tensioner was about $30 US. usually as a precaution i go ahead and change the belt.

actually you have several options: you can take the idler off and re-grease/ repack the bearing with special high viscosity and high temp.grease about $8 cdn(thick), or you can replace the factory sealed bearing about $11 cdn or replace the whole thing for $30 DIYS * nut is metric and is usually a reverse thread so don’t try and turn it counterclockwise as with a standard bolt or you will break it off-$320 fix – it has to go clockwise to OFF done it all three ways even broke my first one !!!
