How reliable are the power accessories in GM trucks?

Question:

Hi: I’m planning on buying a new c1500 pickup (extended cab) and it looks like the silverado is the way to go, but everything is power (power windows, doors, seats, etc). How reliable are all those power accessories? Is there a way to override them if they go out? WOuld it be better if I tried to stick with something with out all those power accessories? Thanks Roger C. Covalt (remove the XX to send mail) http://www.znet.com/~covalt

We’ve had three gmc picemups with power and have never had a failure. The electric windows have no backup but the door locks can be operated manually, lock on/off.  All of the p.u. s ran over 4 years and over 60k.

I’ve got a 92 silverado PU with 111,000+ miles.  Never had a problem with anything until recently.  Intermitant wipers have been doing crazy things.  I was told in this group that it is a matter of replacing the pulse control module on the wiper motor housing. Other than that, not problems. I have a 95 C1500 Ext. cab Silverado. Have never had a single problem. Don’t abuse the truck and it’ll last forever.     *    dz – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Hi: > I’m planning on buying a new c1500 pickup (extended cab) and it looks > like the silverado is the way to go, but everything is power (power > windows, doors, seats, etc).  Is it true that GM has a new 350 with more horse power (75hp) for the 1999 pickups. I have been told not to buy a 98 because the 99’s will have a 325 rated horse power and mor torq.

Response:

GM has three new motors for the ‘99 pickups, the two I can recall are a 5.3l and a 6.0l, I am not sure of H.P and torque. There is a write up on these new trucks in the current Motor Trend.

As reliable as just about anything out there, but, more importantly, easy to find new and used replacements for low prices once they do break. Usually pretty easy to fix on these trucks — Jimmy Fingers

Just like to point out that two of the V-8s have Aluminum heads. These motors are based upon the Corvette all aluminum engine. I would be concerened about reliablity. Guess we will have to wait and see. GM proclaims them as the most durable/advanced truck engine yet. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > GM has three new motors for the ‘99 pickups, the two I can recall are a 5.3l > and a 6.0l, I am not sure of H.P and torque. My power door lock broke after 3 months.  The cluster went out 3 times in 1 1/2 years.   – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >            jk
