Help with GM 14 Bolt rearend

Question:

Hi I have a 1977 GMC 1/2 ton pick up that has a 12 bolt rearend in it and I just got a 14 bolt rear end out of a 1987 2500 chevy pick up that was parted out. ( I got it for free)  Im thinking about using it in my 77GMC.  Has anyone ever put a 14 bolt in a older GMC/ Chevy truck??? is it a good rearend for light towing? can i get a posi for it?   any info would be great thanks and have a happy new year roch

Response:

Is it a 14Bolt full float, or semi-float. You can tell the 14b full flot is a little more squared off diff, and has the eight innter bolts on each end of the axles. The full float is better, but the semi-flot one will suit your need fine. Be happy with your gift. The 14bolt full-float   is probably the best axle GM has ever made. It is very durable, pratically unbrakeable. Many 4×4′ers run 44" tires without problem. They are both excellent axles for towing, light or extrememly heavy. Many, many people have put 14bolts into those trucks. It will swap into your truck without problem, a direct bolt it, biggest deal is the emergency brake hookup and you’ll have to either change your yoke on the transfer case and driveshafts, or just run a "conversion u-jioint" on the rear of the rear drive shaft (One pole one size, other pole a bigger size). You can get all sorts of differential set-ups for it.
