I have a 98 CK 1500 4×4. This truck pinged after 5000 miles out of the box. I took it in and the dealer had no clue and said that it was the way I was shifting. Bull Shit"" I was running 92 octane and it went away, I was pissed that it should run fine on 87 octane. Not to forget the shitty mileage I was getting. Is 11 MPH in the city bad or good? I wanted better mileage still so I purchased a HYPERTUNE programmer and the 160 deg thermostat. This allowed me to program for better power and improved mileage. Takes 20 Min for the prog. Now overall the mileage has improved to 14 miles per gallon using 87 octane and the pinging is gone!!!! It will payoff in the long run and long trips as well. The Cat/Back system was 75.00 for the muffler and 125.00 to install. The programmer was 315.00 from lopers High Performance Shop here in Mesa, Az. My brother recently had to rebuild his ‘88 GMC K2500 with the 5.7 – running rough, burning too much oil. We ride in his truck alot and I have noticed excessive pinging under load for several years. He was going to put the throttle body/intake manifold back on as he took it off – as one unit. I commented that since his gasket set came with a new throttle body gasket he should use it. Ok – disassembled the setup and found the original gasket was wrinkled in one spot to the point of letting in air. Since he has owned this truck from new and has never touched the engine internals, I believe he has been running lean for years. One year on rebuild now and it never pings. Check for vacuum leaks – downstream of MAP/MAF sensors. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have a 92 GMC K1500 with the 5.7 that has pinging excessively lately > under a light load. I have a 92 GMC K1500 with the 5.7 that has pinging excessively lately under a light load. Truck has 65,000 miles. I replaced the ECR valve and a diagnostics computer shows no trouble codes or failed sensors. Truck used to run fine on 87 octane and even with 89 octane it still pings.Any ideas? Thanks, Mark
