Help – HEI coil on '87 GMC – image02.jpg (0/1)

Question:

thanx for the replies – my truck’ll be running on Mon.

Response:

‘87 GMC 1500 PU,  5.7 L with HEI external coil [not coil in the cap] Does anyone know how many wires go to this coil. Besides the 8mm coil wire, there are 2 places to plug connectors,  yet I only have one connector going to this coil. I bought the truck as a "rebuild project" so I never knew the original wiring. A haynes manual wiring diagram shows 3 wires – black, white, pink/black for the coil. I have pink and white. The pink leads to a harness [ I assume it's the +] the white is cut : doesn’t go anywhere, is this neg. ?  refer to jpeg image (decode binary attachments) The coil I have is a replacement coil from Mallory, and as you can see is identical to original. {the pink wire was frayed – thats why it was spliced}

Response:

This is not a binary group, you will have to post it on a web site and place a link in your post for it to be seen. — Big Chris If God is good, and God gives us life, then life must be good, even if we don’t particularly like it.  –Rich Mullins – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> ‘87 GMC 1500 PU,  5.7 L with HEI external coil [not coil in the cap] > Does anyone know how many wires go to this coil. Response:

The Electrical connections are the same ( as I recall) for both connectors on the coil. I’m not sure what they were ment for.  Typical installations only use one. Response:

Ok, I just looked at my truck. I have the identical connector that your photo shows, with the smaller gauge white wire that is terminated (the one I called the tach? wire) and the larger gauge pink wire that  goes into the wiring harness of the truck. In addition, (and what appears to be missing on your truck), the second connector has two wires, one pink and one white, that are the same gauge as the white wire on the other connector. The two wires on the second connector go straight to the base of the distributor. If I recall these plug into the ignition module, so be sure to check which wire goes where.  Looks like you just need to find the harness you’re missing at a parts store or junkyard.
