Headlights

Question:

I have a `99 GP GT with automatic headlight control.  The problem is that my full headlight system switches on too late in the evening.  I usually have to turn my lights on manually.  They turn on about an hour after they should.  When I start my car in the dark, my lights turn on, so I think that the sensor is okay.  Is there anything I can do so they turn on earlier? Could I place a piece of tint over or in the sensor hole that would make it appear and hour or two "darker" so the lights would switch on earlier?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My wife works in home health, and has a handicapped parking placard. When the weather is gray, and she wants full lights, she just throws this up on the dash over the sensor.  Works every time. — Big Daddy       loose the WW to email             ‘74 Sporty  hot, blue, and rigid                 http://209.27.24.92/usr/mel/rmh/bigdaddy.jpg ICQ# 6342575      AIM "crowfam4" ASE Master Auto tech.  Chevrolet Certified Craftsman tech.

Or she could turn the light switch on. Works every time too! :)

Hmm, maybe they’ve changed the threshold; our 95 Grand Am turns the lights on when it’s not that dark out. Anyway, I suppose you could put a piece of film negative over the photocell or something. I have a 94 GMC with the 4 halogen headlight system.  It has annoyed me from day one, that when you switch to high beam the low beam lamps go off.  It would seem to me that it is more desirable for all four lights to be on when high beam is selected. I remember a couple of years ago reading in a trucking mag that there is a shunt kit to allow for all four lights to be on in the high beam mode.  Does anyone know about this, and where I can get a kit? The down side is that most people will think that you still have your hi-beams on, and will flash theirs at you.  After a while you may tire of this, and change them back to the way they are "supposed" to be.  This mod may even not be legal in some states.

If you go to low beam when traffic is approaching from ahead, you won’t have this problem, the low beams will be on, no high-beams. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > The down side is that most people will think that you still have your > hi-beams on, and will flash theirs at you.  After a while you may tire of > this, and change them back to the way they are "supposed" to be.  This mod > may even not be legal in some states. > J.C. We installed a relay, one that GM uses in their camper package, to put all four on at once.  Works like a damn. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I have a 94 GMC with the 4 halogen headlight system.  It has annoyed > me > from day one, that when you switch to high beam the low beam lamps go > off.  It would seem to me that it is more desirable for all four > lights > to be on when high beam is selected. > I remember a couple of years ago reading in a trucking mag that there > is > a shunt kit to allow for all four lights to be on in the high beam > mode.  Does anyone know about this, and where I can get a kit? > Jim Bryant > Try this website: > http://www.truckautoaccessories.com/ > They sell a headlight coupler accessory. > — > Mike > 99 Silverado 4×4 4.8L 5 spd > Share what you know. Where did you install the relay? Is there a socket for it? Do you have a p/n for the relay? Sounds like it could be a good idea, but how and where to install? Mike > We installed a relay, one that GM uses in their camper package, to put all > four on at once.  Works like a damn.

Bill, You are implying that the low and high beams are coupled, which is not the case. Ordinarily, only the low beams will be powered, but when you turn on the high beams, the low beams remain powered. Whether there are any state or local laws outlawing this modification, I can’t tell you. I would like to point out that you aren’t supposed to use high beams in traffic anyway, so ideally nobody will ever know the difference. You are right; I read the original post wrong.  I was thinking he wanted both beams on with the LOW beams (which some people do).

Does anyone know of a website or company that sells the headlight conversion kit that turns all four headlights on when you turn on the brights. I had one on my 98 and Ioved it Thanks

Response:

A $3 relay at any automotive shop will do it. Cut low beam wire and wire in relay as shown 85 – ground 86 – Tap high beam wire 30 – headlight side of low beam wire 87 – 12 volt (put a 30amp fuse within 6 inches of where you tap power) 87a – firewall side of low beam wire
