GMC Sonoma SLS 4×4

Question:

I recently purchased a new GMC Sonoma 4×4 and am pleased to find the quality MUCH better than my Ford F-150 I traded in.  This is my first GMC truck and my first 4×4 and had a couple questions I hope someone could help answer. According to my manual I should check the levels of the F/R differential on a routine/specific basis.  According to a friend of mine he says that the level should never drop.  If it does that means there is a leak.  However, this doesn’t seem right to me otherwise the manual would not tell me to check it.  Does a low level indicate a leak?  Why would the level drop? Thanks Rob

Check the level and color.  Though there is a defined service interval for the fluid, checking the color will give a good indication regarding how the diff is wearing, and if there’s any water in it, as well as checking the level.  The only way for water to leave the diff besides a leak is to have the diff overheat and fluid comes out the overflow tube… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I recently purchased a new GMC Sonoma 4×4 and am pleased to find the quality >MUCH better than my Ford F-150 I traded in.  This is my first GMC truck and >my first 4×4 and had a couple questions I hope someone could help answer. >According to my manual I should check the levels of the F/R differential on >a routine/specific basis.  According to a friend of mine he says that the >level should never drop.  If it does that means there is a leak.  However, >this doesn’t seem right to me otherwise the manual would not tell me to >check it.  Does a low level indicate a leak?  Why would the level drop? >Thanks >Rob
