Actually, I’m hearing rumors that some of the new Saabs, as they get re-designed, will be built on GM’s Sigma platform. Any truth???
Response:
Fuck, I’m really being taken wrong lately. What I MEANT was that it was a GM company, that’s all. Sam

Yet another unfounded claim…. My GM truck (‘79 GMC K-1500) is going on about 370,000 miles now. Original motor. Heads never been off. Beat that with any other manufacture’s hunk of rusted casting. And it’s been beaten and abused. Sucked more mud in through the intake than I care to think about. Runs 75-80 MPH with a 4" lift and 33" BFG’s for 1500 mile trips. With a bed full of engines, transmissions and motorcycles – pulling a 2600 lb car to boot, through the mountains of Western PA, WV, and TN. Getting 16mpg. How do ya like them apples? Jeremy

No, Saab is owned by GM….but it’s a stretch to say that Saab "is" GM. Just like a Chev Tracker might seem like it’s a GM product….but when you actually work on them….you quickly understand that it’s Suzuki thru and thru. In that case, many GM engines are actually Mexican, and the front diff I’ve got apart in my bay is Brazilian because it’s got that name stamped on the right case half. Hopefully I’m not being too "contrary"! Ian

> That’s Daewoo you dumbass! Kia is owned by Hyundai…..
Show us a list of differences between Daewoo and Kia and we’ll be impressed. Fact is, there’s a lot of inbreeding among car companies at the business level. Much less at the engineering level. I got called under the carpet by a guy once for owning a Nissan because it was "un-American." Turned out, he was driving a Caravan (I think), made by Mitsubishi. I recently traded a far-east built Dodge for a Detroit GM. First real American vehicle I’ve owned in 20 years, and I’d be happy to tell you why I quit buying American 20+ years ago. No regrets. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Rich > FOr both you and Ian, > Kia was going broke, and they were purchased by GM It was a fire sale, > $500M > as I remember… > Still Korean, but still GM. Ed: Just wanted you to understand that to keep the US economy within certain parameters, some people must buy Ford and Dodge. It appears that you were picked (it’s done by lottery) and when that happens you are marked to receive a deliberately faulty GM product. It is well known that nearly all people would not change from GM willingly so grand plans are put in place to move certain designated people in the direction of competing auto makers. I hope that explains things. You must wait out the mandatory 7 year period before you will be eligible for the usual quality GM product. I’m sorry, but that’s just the luck of the draw.

After perusing this newsgroup for a year or so, I can see how anyone can get that feeling (especially if you listen to Dean <grin>). However, do a google search on "Toyota Tundra Problems" It may make you run to the General. I feel that the quality of all trucks seems to have declined. I have decided to keep my Nissan Hardbody for that reason. It has given me 100k trouble free miles – no warped rotors, etc. The only thing that has gone wrong is that the exhaust manifolds have warped causing a minor exhaust leak until it warms up. A common problem on these and a $500 repair to have them machined flat. It is still as tight and rattle free as it was when I bought it. — Rob Munach, PE Excel Engineering Carrboro, NC
Response:
Rob, Point well taken. I’m old enough to remember when GM made trucks (mid 70’s for example) that you couldn’t break if you tried. OK, the bodies rusted off in a couple of years but mechanically they were near bulletproof. My rants against GM are for exactly that reason. They know how to do better, much better. But at the end of the day, GM junk is still better than anybody else’s junk which is why I continue to drive them. My best friend’s family owns a horse farm, they bought an 87 chevy regular cab 2WD truck for towing. That truck has been hit by a deer, run full speed into a cotton field, and used for towing on a frequent basis. As long as he doesnt use anything under 92 octane it runs great. The truck will probably outlast all of us (smallblock 350!)
Response:
I’m in my right mind, the truck was $2k! It runs strong, and even after making the necessary repairs, I’m still only in it 5K. I love my Big, black Chevy truck. When I buy again(god-willing a job presents itself to me shortly), I’ll buy a chevy truck again. Sam

I tired other brands but went back to chevy. I learned to drive in a 72 truck, took my drivers test in a 79 blazer and bought an 88 S-10 from a repo auction. After hosing the mud out of the cab I drove it to 170,000 when something hit the radiator on the highway and it blew overheating the engine. Pulled the engine out using a swingset for a hoist and rebuilt it myself and put it back together and it still runs. It was stolen once, wrecked twice, shot, mud raced, jumped over rr tracks, rear ended twice, Driven 9 hours straight at times for a job I had. Hauled cows to the sale for dads farm and a load of lumber as tall as the cab up a WV mountain. Moved away to college and dove it to school 5 days a week and worked 6 days a week. It never once refused to start, never once broke down in those 4 years of college. I drove it to my part time job while in school, my first and second third jobs out of school. Now I’m at a better job, got a salary over 50k per year so my wife quit her job and works part time while she goes to school. Bought her a 2001 Impala and me a 2000 S-10.

Rob said: "The only thing that has gone wrong is that the exhaust manifolds have warped causing a minor exhaust leak until it warms up." HA! I didn’t realize it was a common problem. I had a 94 nassin
until earlier this year when I got my first Chevy. Anyway, it had the same problem … even broke the head off one of the manifold bolts. Had to get that tapped and removed. But the ^#(()$% Nissan dealership didn’t have enough sense to replace (or machine) the old manifold and did nothing more than put a new bolt in it. As I’m sure you can guess, it broke the new one too. This time I left it … been like that for the past 2 years and is to this day. Hehe, I’ll have to tell my dad about this (he bought the truck from me). Good trucks though … I enjoyed mine for 6 years … just got ready for 2 pedals instead of 3 ya know? :) Oh, and do Japanese ppl not use cupholders??? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> For the life of me, I cannot understand why anybody in their right mind > would pay the exorbitant money GM charges for the crap they sell.
