gears?

Question:

I would look for the whole rearend; housing and all.  I can’t remember which axle you have, but if you have a 10 bolt, you can even use one that has the 5 bolt axles from a 2wd TRUCK.  All you do is swap the brake backing plates and the axles(maybe pinion yoke?) with your old ones.  Just make sure the gear ratio’s the same.  This is the cheapest way I know of to fix it without having to buy and set up new gears (yuck!). highrider71

I recently posted about a 4 wheel drive not engaging, and from using 4 low with alot of rpm’s weakend the rear end,  I know nothing about gears or changing them.. But can I  take out the front gears and use the spider gears for now in the rear end just to use til after x-mas, I would use 4×4 to drive but the hub on one side is frozen or transfercase, not sure.. just in a bad situation, and need to drive it.  Thanks in advance for any replies, Jim —–= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =—– http://www.newsfeeds.com – The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! —–==  Over 80,000 Newsgroups – 16 Different Servers! =—–

Response:

what I have done, and in a basic transportation need situation, was just run it in front wheel with the rear drive shat out. This is by no means good for the vehicle – but will get you to work.

GMC, No you can’t. And fooling with differentials is not a job for rookies. It takes lots of  knowledge and some special tools. Have a mechanic look at it. The problem may not be what you think. Maybe I’m missing something here.  But I thought your immediate problem was getting the vehical operational so you could drive it to work.  If you can’t disengage 4WD, they why not remove the front driveshaft?  If the transfer case isn’t attached to the front gearbox, I don’t see how any damage can occur. -Knuckles
