Fuel Pump Buzzing

Question:

Had a new pump put in my car when I hit 250,000. It didn’t need it but thought I’d have it done. The new one makes a nice WOOOOOOOO noise now. The old one was silent..They also put 2 hoses on and the sending unit too. They say its because the new one is a higher volume pump. Plus my old pup had a steel casing around the pump. The new one doesn’t have a casing. I do notice that the car can take a certain road that has an S turns enter & exit ramp. WHen I’d go around it with the old pump the car would bog out or flatten out. With the new pump it doesn’t do that. I can be doing 40 around the curves and hit the gas now & there’s no hesitation. 7000 miles later its still going WOOOOOOoooooooooooo. I have notice that almost all full sized GMC truck fuel pumps make a buzzing sound.  Some are quite loud.  Is there an after market fuel pump available which doesn’t buzz?  Also how much is involved in switching a fuel pump in a 1999 Suburban?

Response:

Yep they buzz or die. Brand new they don’t buzz, at least not till you install them. Changing the pump is easy, Empty the tank, remove it, remove the pump/sending unit from the tank. Then change out the offending part. Reverse procedure. However be prepared for the new pump to get noisy in a few thousand miles. — Pacifism – The theory that if they’d fed  Jeffrey Dahmer enough human flesh,  he’d have become a vegan.
