Fire in 97 GMC 4X4

Question:

Was driving down the road last night to go fishing in a 97 GMC 1500 with the what ever liter(similar to a 350 I think).  Going about 60 mph when all of a sudden there is a loud pop!  My first thought was tire blew but ride was fine…1 or 2 seconds later I look in my left side mirror and flames are flying out of the back left wheel well.  I immediately pulled to the side, we all got out as fast as we could and the whole front undercarriage on the drivers side was enveloped in flame.  People who stopped said to get away from the truck, but that was my property and I grabbed a fire extinguisher from the truck and was able to extinguish most of the flames.  As it kept burning a motor home stopped and gave me another extinguisher with which I was able to stop the fire.  Apparently the transmission hose from the cooler blew and the tranny fluid hit the catalytic converter and caught fire.  The truck only has 37,000 miles and I find this very strange.  Anyone ever heard of this happening?  Thanks    Scott Mitchell

transmission lines and fittings are on the passengers side, as is the cat on a 5.7 sure it wasn’t oil cooler or remote oil filter line? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Was driving down the road last night to go fishing in a 97 GMC > 1500 with the what ever liter(similar to a 350 I think).  Going about > 60 mph when all of a sudden there is a loud pop!  My first thought was > tire blew but ride was fine…1 or 2 seconds later I look in my left > side mirror and flames are flying out of the back left wheel well.  I > immediately pulled to the side, we all got out as fast as we could and > the whole front undercarriage on the drivers side was enveloped in > flame.  People who stopped said to get away from the truck, but that > was my property and I grabbed a fire extinguisher from the truck and > was able to extinguish most of the flames.  As it kept burning a motor > home stopped and gave me another extinguisher with which I was able to > stop the fire.  Apparently the transmission hose from the cooler blew > and the tranny fluid hit the catalytic converter and caught fire.  The > truck only has 37,000 miles and I find this very strange.  Anyone ever > heard of this happening?  Thanks    Scott Mitchell
