Duramax mileage

Question:

Was wondering what Duramax 2500 4×4 guys are getting for mileage? Heard about swapping to larger tires and using the extra grunt to turn them and get great miles? Any thoughts?

Response:

Customers were telling me 18-19mpg unloaded combined mileage.  I really didn’t hear a loaded.  And yes, bigger tires will cause your mileage to go down, maybe considerably.  If you do use bigger tires, be sure to go with the correct load range, if you plan on any towing or hauling. Response:

I don’t have a Duramax… However my unloaded 96 GMC K2500 w/ 350 Vortec makes 10.8 mpg city and 14.0 mpg hiway.

Response:

Do you own one, or just shopping? The Town Hall forum on Edmunds have post ranging from 9.5-11.9 mpg. The GM-Truck forum after break-in reports 16-19.5. Your mileage may vary. I’m currently watching a 2002 on eBay, I drove our 2001 8900 miles last year so who cares what mileage it gets. I’ll have a three GMC driveway. First few tanks: ~16.7 MPG mostly city ~19.8 MPG mostly hwy After modifications which inlcuded a K&N and a Fuel Saver Plus(for diesels) ~25.1 MPG city ~35.3 MPG hwy Can you believe that? <BG> Andrew

Response:

what is this fuel saver plus? is this some scam? 25.1 city is nice, but 35 on the hwy, man, real nice… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > First few tanks: > ~16.7 MPG mostly city > ~19.8 MPG mostly hwy > After modifications which inlcuded a K&N and a Fuel Saver Plus(for diesels) > ~25.1 MPG city > ~35.3 MPG hwy > Can you believe that? <BG> > Andrew

Sorry to those who were victims of my poor attempt at humor.  The fuel saver is that magnetic contraption that fits around the fuel lines to alter the molecular structure for a perfect burn, resulting in optimum fuel usage.  It doesn’t work.  The K&N is probably the most hotly debated aftermarket piece of eqiuptment there is.  I was poking fun at our desire to try just about any trick available to squeeze out an extra few mpg’s.   Out of everything I have ever tried, the only things I have found to consistently increase MPG are 1) alter driving habits 2) get a smaller vehicle with a smaller engine 3) design an engine and fuel with perfect combustion so that no energy is lost.  I have yet to get to #3. I will retreat with my deleted post to reading rather than responding. Andrew

My understanding is that the military has been using these "Martian Gadgets" on tanks for years to improve mileage.  Not so?

I’m not Andrew, but the ONLY way to get the Duramax is to get the allison auotmatic or the ZF(?) 6-speed stick behind it… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Andrew, > So ya get 16.7 to 19.8 on the fuel economy.
