Differential identification help
Question:
Per the Jan 2001 Off Road Magazine, both the GM 10 bolt and the Dana 44 ring gears are 8.5 inches in diameter and have 30 splines. The axle diameter at the splines is 1.31 inches on the Dana 44 and 1.285 inches on the 10 bolt. It is a good article on diffs.

I think the ring gear on the Dana 44 is smaller than 93/4 in. for sure the 60 is this size, I just rebuilt a 44 on an older Ford truck and the ring gear looked much smaller.

Hey thanks for the help. I should clarify that I only have the differential unit that came with 12 bolt gears obviously not installed. You said the pressed on bearings should have shims between them and the differential carrier? The locker I bought only has 1 bearing on it but that bearing has no shims behind. So I guess I am still not sure. Thanks for the help anyway. Later, Blair – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> If it is a Dana it shoud say so on ring gear, also the set up shims for the > diff. case side bearings are behind the bearings against the diff. gear > case, on GM diffs the shims are between the outer part of the bearing and > the axle housing. > > Hey guys, I just bought a used differential that is supposed to be for a > > solid axle 10 bolt front end. Blair, The Dana 44 has a 9 – 3/4" diameter ring gear. The 12 bolt has an 8 – 7/8" diameter ring gear. The 10 bolt has a 8 – 1/2" ring gear. If it is a Dana it shoud say so on ring gear, also the set up shims for the diff. case side bearings are behind the bearings against the diff. gear case, on GM diffs the shims are between the outer part of the bearing and the axle housing.

I have no idea why my original post didn’t make it to the newsgroup. Can anyone else see the original. Anyhow I have ascertained that you could get a 10 bolt with 30 splines. But I still am not sure about what diff this is. Also do 10 bolt differentials fit both front and rear?
