Difference between a K5 and V10 Blazer
Question:
Wow! A chance to use my mind and I forgot! If I am not mistaken, GM used the ‘V’ designation for the IFS for a few years.

Those are GMC designations. 15 is 1/2 ton, 25 is 3/4 ton, 35 is one ton, etc. In ‘88 they combined Chevy and GMC designations and they all became 1500, 2500, 3500, etc. Tony Kimmell Normal, IL

I was trying to make it simple and cover the whole 73-87/91 in one go
I own both — see my .sig — but was trying to answer the question succintly. Now the one that throws me is the new trucks … 2500HD is a one ton, single rear wheel, and a 3500 is a one ton duallie? I thought the T’s were Two wheel drive and the S were 4WD, but yeah, I knew that. You notice that it’s a GMC S-15 (T-15) but a Chevy S-10/T-10? And no, I don’t know about model years for those. I only track the full-size, they’re enough to drive me batty.

Hey Dean, do they still call them T-10’s? I read that in a manual (but it only went to 97) and I was wondering if they reverted back to the old ways since then? -Brian

I don’t know that there really is a difference. When I price them out on Edmunds (I’m on a quest to find the perfect one for a project) after a certain year the newer ones are V10’s. So far as I can tell they are still the 73-91 Blazer.

Mmm. You’re confusing apples and oranges, though it’s not obvious. I will summarise and oversimplify. Those who know better, don’t flame me. I know I’m cutting corners
"K/5" is an emblem on the side of the Blazers and does not refer to an official GM model #. Basically, any 69-91 Blazer could be called a K-5; I donno when they stopped putting it on the emblems. A K-10 is a GM 4WD 1/2 ton truck (K=4WD 1=1/2 ton.) "C" trucks are 2WD, and "20" series are 3/4 ton, "30" series 1 ton. Sometimes you see "15" or "1500" for half ton, "25"/"2500" for 3/4, etc. These same models apply to the pickups as the sport utes, so my Blazer is a K-10 and my Burb is a K-20. Well, except. When the pickups changed for 1988, not *every* truck in the lineup changed: regular and extended cab pickups changed, keeping the C/K desgination, but Blazers (Jimmies), Burbs and crew cabs stayed with the old body style. 1988-1991 "old" body style trucks got the "R" and "V" designations — "R" for 2WD and "V" for 4WD. My Burb, therefore, being in these "inbetween" years, is a V-20 instead of a K-20. In 1992 they consolidated the lineups again and all trucks were C/K again. [I gather this happened again a coupla years ago, but I don't keep track of the new Chebbies.] So, short answer: If you’re looking at a 1988-1991 fullsize Blazer, it’s a "V-10", which would have in previous years been a "K-10". Whew. Hope that’s helpful. I find it frustrating because when ordering stuff for my Burb — to wit, a front tow hitch — people often send me things for a 1990 *pickup* (new body style) which don’t fit. I am starting to tell people I have a 1987 Burb for application purposes ‘cuz then I get the right part
