Chevy vs Ford: Extended cabs

Question:

I’m looking for a new (used) truck, and my choices are S-10 or Ranger. I’m looking for something 93 or newer with automatic transmission and supercab. I’m looking for a direct comparison, or at least some feedback. Which has the most interior room? Which has the better interior? Which has the fewest problems? Which has better fuel economy? Whis is easier to work on? (water pump, spark plug access, belts, etc) What work needs to be done around what miles? Which has a better safety ratin on front and side impacts? Which engine is the best for power vs. economy? I drove a 93 Ranger with a 4 cylinder in it, and I swear I could have ran faster. I test drove a 95 S-10 4.3-v6 and a 97 Ranger 4.0-v6; I liked the windshield wipers, stereo, and engine of the Ranger, but the dash, map lights in the mirror, and armrest console of the S-10 better. I thought the looks and the ride were about the same; I’m more into the creature comforts and low maintenance. The interior windowshade cover on the Ranger is neat; I’ve seen those on the Escort wagons. Does a company make them for aftermarket Ford/GMC? Horror stories and testimonials welcome. pdm anybody want a 87 Thunderbird? Slightly used?

You know, there’s a really informative magazine called ‘Consumer Reports’ …    they have a Used Vehicle Guide that is very informative.  You can either : (1) find it at the library (2) find it for sale at your local retail bookstore (3) go to the website (but you’ll have to buy a membership      because the website basically has all their magazine      articles in it — a bargain I think.   http://www.consumerreports.org/ (4) Discuss it with an experienced mechanic (5) Test drive them more In a newsgroup you’ll find a lot of biased opinions. Like when I say "Personally, I hate Ford.  GM is way better."

I like biased opinions. They’re more fun than regular opinions ^_^ pdm says the hell with it: I’m mating my t-bird to a 4×4 frame. With big tires. And a light bar.

I’ve a 90 Ford Ranger and my father a 95 S-10.  Two comfort problems w/ Dad’s Chevy.  First, the bucket seat padding breaks down and the bolster under your thigh doesn’t.  His leg (and mine when I drive the Chevy) fall asleep.  Not a good thing if you like control.  Second, he has a 4WD.  The tranny housing limits passenger foot placement and therefore leg movement. It is definitely not fun to be the passenger in his Chevy on a long haul. MJH

Response:

You’re comparing vehicles that are 5 years apart. My dad has an 85 Chevy Dually.  There’s like almost a damn full size couch behind the steering wheel in that thing.  (Bench seat). Sat in a 95 Ranger ?  Probably not as comfortable as your 90 … – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->I’ve a 90 Ford Ranger and my father a 95 S-10.  Two comfort problems w/ >Dad’s Chevy.  First, the bucket seat padding breaks down and the bolster >under your thigh doesn’t.  His leg (and mine when I drive the Chevy) fall >asleep.  Not a good thing if you like control.  Second, he has a 4WD.  The >tranny housing limits passenger foot placement and therefore leg movement. >It is definitely not fun to be the passenger in his Chevy on a long haul.

Response:

Well you are talking about midsize vehicles.  If you want more room buy a full size. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I’ve a 90 Ford Ranger and my father a 95 S-10. >MJH

Ah.  Blessed intectuallism. Personally I’ve never seen a "compact dumbass." Oh.  How tall were you, sir?   Aren’t trolls fairly short? I am not using a valid reply address, so reply to me only in the newsgroup.  If I want to hear from you, I will give you my real e-mail address. Spamlessly yours          Klyf the Not-Quite-Sane
