Response:
I saw a Car and Driver report on TNN. The Avalanche has pretty radical stying (for a Chevy) and should silence critics of the Silverado relative to it’s conservative styling. Very cool. It is based on the Suburban frame, has a full size cab like a Suburban or Tahoe in the front and rear seats. The box is short, but there is a pass-through, and also the whole front of the box opens, the rear window removes, and the rear seat folds down so you can lay a 4×8 sheet of plywood in the back. It has a hard tonneau cover, solid enough to stand on, which will fold forward or is removable. It has the 5.3 liter engine, same powertrain as Suburban, same interior as current C/K or Suburbans. Supposedly they are shooting for a price between a loaded Silverado and a loaded Suburban. They made a point that Chevy had told Car and Driver that although their test vehicle was a prototype, it’s features were "locked in" and the production (2001 model year) would have "only the most minor" of differences if any at all. I am skeptical about the folding down box front and removable rear window. Seems like a rattle/squeak waiting to happen. Who knows if all this is true? Chevy was adamant that this wasn’t a concept vehicle, but a final prototype. I’m skeptical, but whatever it turns out to be, I think it will be pretty cool.
