Can GM design only ugly cars?
Question:
The Echo does look kind of silly (looks like a Corolla that’s been rammed in from the rear), but every time I see one, what I always think is, "They put the instrument panel in the CENTER of the dashboard? From what Car and Driver magazine has to say the Aztek is undergoing a styling "freshening". As for small cars I think the Toyota Echo is the worst one of them all. If this is Toyota’s way of attracting younger buyers then they’ve got a lot of work to do. They’re geek cars to those in their twenties. Check out the new Matrix though.

Probably the same people that designed that butt ugly Chevy Avalanche thing. They must have grown up watching Japanese Transformers cartoons on TV.

XXXX They should do some serious drug testing in the design depts. I saw a Ford Focus the other day and got to laughing so hard I almost wrecked my Chevy G-20 van. Then a Jap gas/electric drove past and I had to pull off the freeway as I was in tears. My sides hurt from laughing so bad I couldn’t drive for 10 minutes. The cars look like Jap cars from the late 40’s. 29

I agree with you. I always take another glance when I see an Alero or Aurora on the road. Greg
Response:
Oldsmobile, isn’t that the brand that GM has so thoughtfully decided to drop? And what does that tell us about the marketing decisions at GM? If we like Aleros and Auroras, now’s the time to buy because they will not be around for long. Just don’t pay too much, they are probably depreciating even before they leave the dealer’s lot. Let’s keep our collective fingers crossed that Bob Lutz is the guy to turn things around and restore GM to a leadership role in styling in North America. GM makes attractive cars, they just don’t offer very many here in NA. You have a point (a lot of people pick on the Aztek, but I personally think the Avalanche is far uglier). In my opinion, however, the current crop of Oldsmobiles are the nicest-looking vehicles to come out of GM in the last 30 years. Modern styling, but tasteful. The rest of their brands are one or the other, but not both.

G.T., I would humbly suggest that you’re wasting your time looking at cars on the web, when you could be seeing what they really look like in real-life and test-driving them. Or do you rely on other people’s reviews of movies too and not go to see one’s that have been given poor reviews? > > Bwhahahahaha, I don’t know under which aesthetics you would think it’s > "the most beautiful touring sedan I have seen in 25 years"? Have you > ever looked at any other cars?
This remark is difficult to respond to, since you haven’t seen the car and I have. Take a look at one in real-life and then you’ll be qualified to comment. As to the 2nd part of your comment, I can only respond by saying that it would be literally impossible note to look "at other cars", unless you are blind. So your question made no sense. > I think you need some treatment for that "blind brand loyalty" problem > you seem to have! It’s hard to believe that anyone with an open mind would drive a Jeep Cherokee. Bwaaahaha! Perhaps an open mind with wind blowing through!!! And by the way, the Cherokee is not a "semi-ugly" vehicle, it is butt-ugly! Bwaaahaha! Which brings us back to your original post – Since you presently own a vehicle which you readily admit is ugly, should we expect you to buy one of the G.M.’s that you tell us are so ugly? They do say that history repeats itself!!!!

Top Ten Reasons GM Designs Ugly Cars: 10. Designers wake up every morning and piss on Harley Earl’s grave. 9. GM found out too late that "Hyundai Designer Exchange Program" was bogus. 8. Designers decided to pull a fast one on the corporate guys. 7. Pontiac-GMC division has a bet going with Isuzu to make the "ugliest cars and trucks." 6. Buick design team was lagging behind so other divisions decided to "mess up the line" to keep Buicks the best-looking GM cars. 5. Since Oldsmobile is on the chopping block, GM decided they wanted people to remember the 74 Toronado as beautiful. 4. One of the new designers decided he wanted to make cars that "made people want to buy Yugos." 3. Too many former Ford designers. 2. A crack industrial-espionage team from Toyota snuck in one night and beat all the new GM cars with the Ugly Stick. …and the #1 reason GM designs ugly cars… 1. They thought nothing could be worse than the Xterra. — -Toby Hanson "I don’t know if I’d call him ‘Mr. Goodwrench’- Mr. ‘Mediocre wrench’ is more like it."

That’s hilarious that you mention the CTS. I’m looking for a rear wheel drive sedan so I went to Cadillac’s site and started laughing my head off when I saw the CTS! What a bulbous, hideous looking thing! That’s luxurious? And I thought the Sevilles and others were ugly. I think you need some treatment for that "blind brand loyalty" problem you seem to have! I currently only own a Jeep Cherokee so I have an open mind when it comes to sedans. Since I would like the nicest rear-wheel drive sedan under $38,000 I’ve driven a 330i, a Lincoln LS, and an IS300. The IS300 is too small, the 330i too expensive, so I will probably pick up an LS for Christmas. I already have one semi-ugly vehicle, the Cherokee, and sure don’t need another, the CTS.
