Can a '92 V-6 Grand Am tow much (if anything)?

Question:

I’ve not yet looked into what GM recommends … can this car tow a small to moderate sized boat or enclosed trailer?   What considerations do I need to know about?  Can a hitch even be installed safely on this car? Kasper

Response:

i wouldn’t try towing anything heavier than a personal watercraft with it…. then again, i wouldn’t buy a grand am, either….

Response:

check with hidden hitch, u-haul etc to see if they make a hitch for the car, but note that just because they make one doesn’t mean it is officially reccomended. I’m sure you need to stay under 1,000lb, so you are talking jetski or aluminum fishing boat.

My 92 G/A 3.3 is right at it’s temperature limit during a 100 degree day in stop and go freeway driving.  You will definitely need an external trans cooler and probably a larger radiator or dual fans.

Response:

Buy a $500 truck.

Thanks …y’all have convinced me not to bother trying to tow with this car … if I get a boat, I will also pick up a truck that can pull it. Kasper

Sorry, have to jump in here……isn’t stop and go freeway driving an oxymoron?    Ahhhh, maybe not in Texas… Ian

I seem to remember the 401 in Toronto being like that when I was there :-) Even Saskatoon is like that sometimes, though that’s more due to our dumb-ass freeway design than anything else.. — Robert Hancock      Saskatoon, SK, Canada Home Page: http://www.roberthancock.com/

Hey, I like Saskatoon…..was just out there for a wedding, the sister-in-law lives there and we often go out there.  Circle Drive is ok, they just need to finish all the parts already….I got a big kick out of the University….first of all the buildings are beautiful, but what I really like is the farm type fields and buildings and fences…etc…right in the middle of the city. Only in Saskatchewan. Do you every hit the Scottish Pavilion at the Folk Fest?  The only way to close down an evening at the Folk Fest… Ian

Response:

I wouldn’t do it. The car may not survive the stress. I know people who tow with small front wheel drive cars, but they are constantly fixing them. Get a truck. I can tow a house with my GMC 2500 Van. — Ripper http://www.ripper1.com/ Graphics and murals by Ripper

Yeah, I think they’ve been talking about "finishing Circle Drive" for about 20 years or so :-) Main problem is the traffic lights that cause traffic to back up, though they’re finally getting rid of a few of them and building new interchanges. All that farmland in the middle of the city is kind of interesting – it’s across the street from where I work. I think the university realized they don’t need all of it, though, so they’re leasing some of it out as a big-box retail area. I haven’t been to Folkfest that often, my parents weren’t into it that much.. I suppose I could start going on my own :-) — Robert Hancock      Saskatoon, SK, Canada Home Page: http://www.roberthancock.com/
