Mother’s California Gold is at least as good as Maguire’s, which may be why Mother’s is about all you see at car shows. Certainly either one is better than turtle wax emerald series or Zaino. I have a 2000 Metallallic Indigo Blue GMC. Mother’s wax gives it a really deep metallic shine makes it stand out from other new vehicles of the same color. It lasts a long time. I waxed it in October, went through a Wyoming winter, and it was still beading on July 4th where I waxed it again. How does Maguire’s compare to that? Truck is now two years old, the paint is still like new and I beat the hell out of it in the wild and wooly wastelands of the Rocky Mountain Oil Patch where it is hotter than all hell in the Summer and colder than all hell in the winter with lots of dirt, dust, snow and mud thrown in 12 months a year. What I am really impressed with is how long Mother’s lasts. I never got any other wax to last that long.

Well, it’s certainly hard to dispute actual experience. Wonder if the two other gentlemen in this thread who are Meguiar’s advocates have a story comparable to yours? Perhaps my best bet is to try each product and then judge for myself. Thanks to each of you for the valuable input.

I’ve had excellent luck with Meguiar’s Gold Class liquid wax! I had an 88 Turbo Coupe that I used to show and I used this exclusively along with their quick detailer spray between waxings…I was constantly getting complimenst on the car, and it was just old factory paint!

Maguiar’s Web site suggests applying their polish prior to waxing. Do you subscribe to that recommendation?

Zymol is excellent, but the $40 a jar might be a problem for some. The Meiguirs 26 is good. I’ve used them all and been using Zymol Carbon and Japon for 5 years now.

I’m very impressed with the zaino brothers products but it takes a couple of days to work through the all the treatment steps and is very expensive. I have several friends that have goon to all the trouble and I have never seen to smoother looking cars with a extremely high shine. The look like they are wet but are dry to the touch. http://www.zainobros.com/index.shtml David Power Katy,Texas

I recently did the Meguiar’s Deep Crystal 3-step renewal process on my truck. The front clip and front doors have been repainted due to an accident, so the back half was faded or oxidized and the front was the real black. I have had several people ask me what I used on my truck, that it looks awesome. It shines like it never has before, the color is REAL close to matching. It’s rained since I did the application, couldn’t tell that from a distance, very few noticeable water spots. The 3-step process is Paint Cleaner, Polish, Carnuba Wax. Took me about 4-5 hours to do the whole vehicle, including the wash before I started. As I was going through the steps, I could SEE the difference each one was making, I’d do half the roof for one step, apply it and wipe it off, and that section was darker. On a side note, a friend was trying to clean the finish of the trim on his Intrepid today, wax from automatic car washes had made it look permanently water spotted. I went back to my truck, got the paint cleaner and an applicator pad. Rubbed it on, wiped it off and he said WOW, was back to factory look… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Are there opinions out there as to the best brand and type of wax to use on >a newer GM automobile? > I’m very impressed with the zaino brothers products but it takes a > couple of days to work through the all the treatment steps and is very > expensive. Mother’s California Gold will put as good or better shine as Maquires and lasts a long time. I use it on my 2001 Indigo metallic blue GMC, and was amazed that the wax I put on it last October was still shiny and beading water this May. I’ve never had any other wax I’ve ever used go through a Wyoming oil patch winter that good. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> I recently did the Meguiar’s Deep Crystal 3-step renewal process on my > truck. Scott, I’m not sure I agree with cleaning clay being harsher than other preps. My understanding is that it is much more gentle than then using petroleum products, that seems to be the consensus here. ]Mothers, maguires, or any other premium WAX will do the job. The high ]percentage natural waxes protect better but do not last as long., Use ]them and often. Stay away from silicone polishes and teflons etc. Use ]waxes formulated for clear coat finishes if possible, and use terry ]towling to wipe down and buff. DO NOT use synthetic chamois. I only recommend natural (carnuba) waxes for the real enthusiast. They seem to wear off very quickly. If you want to only wax once or twice a year stick with a nice hard synthetic like RainDance. Natural waxes may be better, but they don’t help after they wear off. Just another opinion. | Andrew P. Yes, I just picked up a new honda, stripped off whatever was on the clear coat with HD Cleanse and waxed with Japon. The zymol waxes are completely safe for clear coats. You are merely adding another layer of protection .. wax/clear coat/paint/primer/metal. Their www site verifies this : http://www.zymol.com/ JR

Sorry, you are dead wrong. The REAL zymol, Not the crap sold in the local auto store, has absolutely NO abrasives. The HD cleanse is an all natural product designed to clean the old wax and oxidation off a car with no abrasives. The wax also is an all natural product with around 28-30 percent pure Carnauba. (sp?) I have used both products on a New black Camry and will tell you that the Zymol produces a better shine than the medalion. No question about it. Get the real Zymol direct from Zymol. The 800 number is in any car magazine in the back. (I don’t have it handy) Stay away from the synthetic stuff, not sure what they do in the long run. (they don’t seem to feed the paint the oils they need, just seal it) John

You most likely will get a wide range of responses on this topic. It’s been discussed to no end sonce I logged on 8 years ago. As a professional detailer I have had the chance to try out several of the top wax’s/polishes on the retail market. This year I tried out a synthetic-polymer polish called FINISH FIRST. I have to say this is hands down the best product on the market today and I very highly recommend it. It applies very easily and comes off just the same. Do a web-search on Wemac Sales if you’re interested. Again, I very highly recommend it. I applied it to my 1992 Mustang GT (Emerald Green) in May of this year and it is >still< beading up like fresh wax. That’s after several nasty "Nor’ Easters" came my way! Since I recommend Finish First, I would not go so far as to say any other product is not worth a look too. Meguiars has an excellent line, as does Mothers and Zymol. A previous post stated Zymol was too abrasive … I don’t think that’s true. Pinnacle is excellent too. I would avoid any harsh prepping materials such as cleaning clay, especially to a Lexus – which uses an advanced clearcoat system, ie. not your average paint job. Since your vehicle is new, make certain the paint has had proper time to cure, roughly 60-90 days, before applying any wax. Also since the vehicle is new, use a mild pre-wax cleaner just prior to waxing. When I applied the polish I let it sit for two hours before removing – and I applied three coats. Also, check out http://www.topoftheline.com/ for an outstanding mail order source. Just send them email for a catalog.
