Another OIL question
Question:
Just a follow up. I finally decided to make the switch to Mobil1 this week. I went to the parts store and looked at the oil displays (The slanted ones where the next case slides down when you pull a case out). I found what I was looking for, Mobil1 5w30, and noticed the price for the case was $28.68 and thought "shoot, that’s not so bad." Then I pulled the case out of the rack and almost fell over when I noticed that the "CASE" only held 6 quarts. I swallowed hard, took it home and did the change. This stuff pours like water. I sure hope it’s gonna do the job. — You don’t shoot to kill. You shoot to stay alive.

Yep, and I still do. 230,000 miles on a 1986 F150 4×4 302 when I sold the rust bucket & never touched the engine. The buyer is still running it 2.5 years later & still no engine problems. Current 1995 Z71 GMC has 187,000 miles with no problems. Some guys are just prejudiced & therefore oblivious to facts. I love the ones that say "Oh well guy, it’s YOUR truck!" Yeah, it is. And it runs forever with Castrol GTX & Fram filters.

I gor for 3000 and actually get it changed somewhere between 3100 and 4000. Another reason to use synthetic.

I used to work at a Jiffy Lube in FL back in like 89/90 but that was so long ago.. and I haven’t been changing my own oil since then and forgot where they all are. I haven’t even looked at say Wal-Mart to see if they even have a grease gun or anything, but I would really feel better doing it myself since then I know what
has actually been done to my truck. Usually when I take it to the fast lube places… I am not even sure if they have done all the things they say they have. I am almost certain that they don’t even check my rear diff let alone the front diff or transfer case. Any info on this would be appreciated. I will switch to Mobil 1 at my first oil change. I live in South Texas on the coast. We get about 3 days a year below freezing. I can get 10w30 a lot cheeper than 5w30. Is the
lower viscosity better for the motor and or gas mileage considering the South Texas heat? I’m just a working stiff, not flush with money. The lube places don’t do all the things they say they do. My wife chewed their ass for checking off things they didn’t check.
Response:
"good old Fram" That is comical to me. Running Mobil 1 with a Fram filter would be like putting chrome rims on a beat up Pinto. With the Mobil 1 you are using extremely good oil, but still taking a chance on allowing garbage to go through your engine by running a Fram filter. Cut one open one time and look at the inside and I would be surprised if you felt comfortable going back to that orange filter. Snowman

Response:
Dean is correct, the manual is the final authority. 3000 miles was made up by someone like Jiffy Lube to drum up business. I run Mobile 1 in my truck, and it’ll get changed at 4500 mile intervals, when I am driving mostly in town, and at 5-6000K intervals when I have driven mostly road miles. Because the nature of my life, lately I’ve been changing it in the spring, and then in late fall, as I haven’t been driving my truck much (a couple of thousand miles a year the past two years). My work car, which I put 45-50K a year on, gets changed every 5-6K, but it’s miles are 90% road miles. Big Chris

Since synthetic oil doesn’t break down, just gets dirty has anyone done the "change filter and add a quart"? And is the Mobil1 oil filter really worth $12 compared to good old Fram? Steve
