ALDL to PC for a 96 Sonoma?

Question:

You have a laptop with no serial port?? How ridiculous. Well I guess it’s going the way of the floppy. FWIW, I believe there are serial-to-USB converters out there. It’s still not advantageous…not very much data comes over the ALDL port on your vehicle. No need for a high speed connection, but if you don’t have a serial port at all… Sam – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > USB would be nice simply for hooking to my Toshiba laptop that lacks the > standard D-type connector.  The company laptop has the standard type – and is my > only way to get my DC215 camera downloaded too. > ALDL is 100% serial. Kits are available, URL is www.obdii.com.  Pretty sure it uses your serial port; I am not aware of any OBD-II laptop interfaces that hook up via USB. Doc

ALDL is 100% serial. No USB interface exists, nor would it be advantageous due to the limitations of OBD(speed and such). Sam

USB would be nice simply for hooking to my Toshiba laptop that lacks the standard D-type connector.  The company laptop has the standard type – and is my only way to get my DC215 camera downloaded too. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > ALDL is 100% serial. ALDL is 100% serial. No USB interface exists, nor would it be advantageous due to the limitations of OBD(speed and such). Sam

Anyone know a good way to hook a laptop (preferably via USB) to the ALDL jack of my 96 GMC Sonoma? Kits are available, URL is www.obdii.com. Pretty sure it uses your serial port; I am not aware of any OBD-II laptop interfaces that hook up via USB.
