98 GMC fuel pump noise???

Question:

The electronic fuel pumps beginning 97 are higher pressure pumps, thus the buzzing noise you hear. They run at about 50-60psi. The noise is normal. I have a 97 GMC Z71, has the same buzz, no problems at 75K miles.

Hello, I am considering purchasing a 98 GMC K-1500 Z-71.  The truck has 41k miles, but I am concerned with the fuel pump.  The pump on this truck seems louder than most and has a definite whining sound compared to the normal buzz.  The salesman (not a GM dealer) says this sound is not uncommon and is nothing to worry about.  I checked on the price of a new fuel pump and it runs about $400 for the part alone. Has anyone out there had a similar experience with this noise or any other advice on this subject?  I really like the truck but can’t afford to change a fuel pump in a month or two. All advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jason

I would have them replace the fuel filter and recheck the noise, a restricted filter can cause the pump to be unnecessarily loaded.

I had the experience in this last month to replace one fuel pump myself in a 1988 suburban and then help my father in law replace a fuel pump in a 1998 Chevy Tahoe.  The actual electric fuel pumps inside the tank were exactly the same, the only difference between the kits (carter pumps) was that the suburban came with slightly difference connectors and wasn’t located inside a plastic holder like the Tahoe pump.  Also the price was quite difference. The suburban pump was $69 canadian and the tahoe pump was $159 Canadian. What a rip off for newer truck owners. Clint
