97 gmc clunk noise in rear

Question:

cluck noise when changing into 3rd gear at 25 mph this is an automatic 4×4 short bed v8 5700 vortex eng. any ideas? i have had this truck into the dealer many times for this noise, now has 32,000 miles it has made this cluck noise after purchasing this truck with 4,000 miles,  3 years or 36,000 miles bumper to bumper warranty.  the dealer says there is nothing wrong. the dealer says i hear it because its a short bed. what a load of crap. the warranty will be out the 20th of this month. this my only grip about this tuck. the dealer greases it, then 3 or 4 weeks later there’s that cluck noise. something has to be wearing out. question #2 i would like to put large off road tires and would need a some kind of lift kit. how many inches ? 2 or 4 would this help to get rid of that clucking noise? thank in advance.          s.w.

SW: I had a ‘97 1500 4X4 and now own a ‘98 Z71, both with the 350 and 4 speed auto trans. I bought both of these trucks new. Both do (‘97 did) the same thing you are talking about, a clunk when the trany shifts into third. I’ve brought both of them into the dealer about the problem and according to the dealer I bought them from "this is normal" in all of these trucks, with some being louder than others. My dealer said the short bed is louder than the long bed. I heard the same story about lubing the drive shaft and it did seem to cure it for a short time, a real short time. What’s strange about both of mine is that they only did the clunking after they were warmed up and never happened when cold or in four wheel drive. I’ve always wondering what the GM Engineers say about this, is this normal in their eyes, and what is the real story as to why this happens? Any GM Engineers out there that would be so kind as to help us understand as to why this happens? My experience has been that this is in the trans., the clutch drum that is splined to the trans case has excessive play and when the clutches are applied as the trans shifts 2 to 3, the clunk is made by the drum rotating slightly in the case splines. Not a pretty condition, but it does not seem to acclerate wear, I.ve had it for 130k – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > cluck noise when changing into 3rd gear at 25 mph this is an automatic > 4×4 short bed v8 5700 vortex eng. any ideas? i have had this truck into > the dealer many times for this noise, now has 32,000 miles it has made > this cluck noise after purchasing this truck with 4,000 miles,  3 years > or 36,000 miles bumper to bumper warranty.  the dealer says there is > nothing wrong. > the dealer says i hear it because its a short bed. what a load of crap. > the warranty will be out the 20th of this month. this my only > grip about this tuck. the dealer greases it, then 3 or 4 weeks later > there’s that cluck noise. something has to be wearing out. > question #2 i would like to put large off road tires and would need > a some kind of lift kit. how many inches ? 2 or 4 > would this help to get rid of that clucking noise? > thank in advance.          s.w.

I had the same experience.  I think the fix lasted about three weeks….but the lubing definately did something. Somewhere along the way I read that the grease used has to be a specific kind of grease.    Only thing I can think of is that they used the wrong grease. Pete Cresswell

You might try checking the u-joints for excess play. It may also be that there is too much play in the ring and pinion gears in the rear. Just my 2 cents.
