94 Dually

Question:

Thanks for your information Jed.  Much appreciated.  It sounds like you indeed know what you’re talking about.  The bad thing is, I don’t know if I want to wait around until 2001.  Probably more people like me.  How much sales will this cost GM? I couldn’t agree more about the arrogance of GM.  Example:  For how many years did the General only offer power seats to the driver side?  What about sentinel light package?  What about all the little trick stuff like the compass mirror? All that stuff was available but you could not get it at any price in a pickup until recently.  Dumb….Very dumb. The new diesel is an Isuzu-engineered, American-built 6.6l V8.  With the tranny that you have, supposed to hit 250 HO & 440 lbs/ft of torque.  With the new baby-Allison five speed automatic, expect 300 HP and about 500 lbs/ft of torque.  Availability, maybe end of 200 model year, but more probably 2001. As far as the Japanese connection is concerned, Isuzu is actually the world’s largest supplier of diesels!  When GM did the updates on the 97 6.5’s (dual thermostats, bigger oil cooler lines, jet-spray piston cooling, and pump updates), it was actually Isuzu who engineered all of these things. Our experience has seen a tremendous difference on the power and reliability of this motor.  The previous 94 & up 6.5’s have been scary. I agree that GM should not be falling behind, but I believe that they have such a bloated bureacracy, that this is the result.  Same thing as the four-door truck.  Whose screwup was that?  Introducing an all new truck with 3 doors when everyone else already has 4!  BUT, I do not believe that there is a better engineered full-size truck out there.  Time will tell. Hope this helps, and good truckin’! jed – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I have a 94 1-ton 3500 GMC Dually with the 6.5 Turbo Diesel.  I >absolutely love this truck!  I don’t know why, but most of the people I >know with the same motor have had nothing but trouble.  Stuff like >injector pumps mostly.  I have only had one injector pump in 76,000 mi >which is nothing normally to brag about, but with this motor it is >good.  I did discover that the Banks Stinger Kit on this motor adds 57 >hp and 125 ft lb of torque.   Really woke up this slug, and it is now >great fun to tow with and drive. > If you go in to a dealer right now with expectations of ordering a new >truck such as what I have right now, you will be told you can’t order >the diesel.  Personally and to each his own, I love diesels.  I find it >frustrating that GM is content to allow Ford and Dodge to eat their >lunch with their diesels.  Rumors are: either the small CAT diesel or an >ISUSU.  If they go Jap, I will have bought my last GMC/Chev.  In >addition, GM has in their infinite wisdom….decided that they will not >change the body style on the 1 ton for possibly 2 more years.  duh!!!! >Wake up dummy’s, everybody else is eating your lunch while you sit >around bragging.  About what I can’t imagine. >Ok…Anybody heard the same rumors?  What do you think about Jap Diesel? >Jim

I just bought a 99′ K-3500 single rear wheel with 5.7 Vortex and 4L80-E tranny & 4.11 gears. The dealer I purchased from said that 2000 model 3500’s would be the same body style of the NEW series.  But it is all just hearsay until the trucks hit the road.  I don’t plan on trading for at least 7 years, so I’m not really concerned.

I have a 94 1-ton 3500 GMC Dually with the 6.5 Turbo Diesel.  I absolutely love this truck!  I don’t know why, but most of the people I know with the same motor have had nothing but trouble.  Stuff like injector pumps mostly.  I have only had one injector pump in 76,000 mi which is nothing normally to brag about, but with this motor it is good.  I did discover that the Banks Stinger Kit on this motor adds 57 hp and 125 ft lb of torque.   Really woke up this slug, and it is now great fun to tow with and drive.  If you go in to a dealer right now with expectations of ordering a new truck such as what I have right now, you will be told you can’t order the diesel.  Personally and to each his own, I love diesels.  I find it frustrating that GM is content to allow Ford and Dodge to eat their lunch with their diesels.  Rumors are: either the small CAT diesel or an ISUSU.  If they go Jap, I will have bought my last GMC/Chev.  In addition, GM has in their infinite wisdom….decided that they will not change the body style on the 1 ton for possibly 2 more years.  duh!!!! Wake up dummy’s, everybody else is eating your lunch while you sit around bragging.  About what I can’t imagine. Ok…Anybody heard the same rumors?  What do you think about Jap Diesel? Jim
