'86 K5 Blazer front hub/rotor

Question:

i need to do the same thing now to my 88 sub.  pep boys has the one piece hub/rotor for i think 190.00 EACH(the most expensive part on the truck). the lock ring kit was about 30.00 bucks at trucks in action in indianapolis but any 4×4 shop should have them. chris wolven 88 suburban 79 bronco 90 challenger superv24 (blown 454) – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Hi all… > So my ‘86 Blazer destroyed a bearing in the right front hub (yes, I > should have checked those when I bought the truck! the left side was > eventually going to fail too). > So it took out the other wheel bearing, the auto hub and made a mess of > the locking rings & tabs too. > So I’m putting in Warn manual locking hubs and new bearings all around. > The left front went fine. > But the right front is going to need a new wheel hub. Hi all… So my ‘86 Blazer destroyed a bearing in the right front hub (yes, I should have checked those when I bought the truck! the left side was eventually going to fail too). So it took out the other wheel bearing, the auto hub and made a mess of the locking rings & tabs too. So I’m putting in Warn manual locking hubs and new bearings all around. The left front went fine. But the right front is going to need a new wheel hub. The hole for the outer bearing is now way too big. So carparts.com is showing the hub & the rotor as two separate parts. They looked like one piece to me, but I didn’t look very hard (and they’re not off at this second…) So are they two pieces? Can I just buy the hub? Are they pressed together? The other thing that’s bothering me are the locking rings that hold the hub on. They’re sort of reusable. But I’d rather replace them. The inner ring has a hole in it for a pin, and that pin is gone. And the PO apparently decided he didn’t need the locking tab that goes between the two rings (which is probably what killed the bearing anyway… those rings probably worked loose without that tab to keep them in place) Anyone know a good source for those? Go to a GM dealer?? Thanks for any help anyone could provide.. — Regards, Bentley Wolfe Senior Support Engineer, Macromedia

junk yard for anything but the bearings

Yes, I’ve thought of that. And I’d save $100.00. But I still may just buy new ones. My real question is still do I have to buy them as a hub/rotor combination, or can I just buy the hub? Thanks for the input! — Regards, Bentley Wolfe Senior Support Engineer, Macromedia — please reply to the forum, not direct mail —

I believe the hub and rotor are separate

Bentley, They are 2 piece. To seperate them, you have to drive out the wheel mounting studs.  Use a lug nut on each stud, (screw the nut on until the threads are just about to come through the nut) support the rotor/hub on the ground, and beat them out with a small sledge hammer. It’s a good idea to get new studs and lugs too. You can use one lug nut, and move it from stud to stud as you drive out the studs. Chances are, you will damage the nut doing this, which is why I say you’ll need new lug nuts. People re-use the studs all the time, but I’d spring for new ones. Then, to assemble the rotor and new hub, you put about 4 big washers (the proper size) on the stud, and then put the nut on. You tighten the nut until the stud is fully seated. Do it on each stud, and the hub and rotor will be one piece again. Looking at the hub and rotor, thinking of it as a clock, start at 9 O’clock, then move to 3 O’clock to do the next stud, then 12 O’clock, then 6 O’clock, then the rest. Keep criss crossing like you do when tightening lug nuts. Use this pattern when driving out the old studs too. I have a 77 and a 84 K5 and if I remmeber right both have the same setup on the hubs. Knock out the lug bolts and then tap the two  parts that makeup the hub apart. If you buy the new hub first you will see were the hub and rotor come apart.
