as long as the hubs are locked in you can shift from 2hi to 4 hi with no ill effects.  at least in my 84 3/4 ton it worked.  i would shift into 4 hi at speeds up to 75 mph. . – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->ONLY the 203 can be shifted on the fly. >Even with that (the NP 203) I suggest slowing down to shift, and not under >accelleration. Thanks for the info. It’s an ‘82 Silverado. When do I lock or unlock  the hubs?

You lock the hubs before you get into 4Hi.  You can lock the hubs any time before (assuming they are stock) you want to go into 4wheel drive.  I suggest you don’t leave them locked without being in 4wheel drive, as it wears parts faster, and cuts down on your gas mileage.  I don’t know the specifics of shifting into 4wheel drive in your truck, whether it is shift on the fly or not.  I think it is, but don’t quote me on that.  Often, on the back side of one of the sun visors there is a sheet about your 4×4 glued that will give you some instructions.  If not, get a owners manual.

You truck has the NP 208 transfer case. It CANNOT be shifted while moving. GM used the NP 203 (fulltime 4wd) NP 205 (part time) and in 81 began using the NP 208. ONLY the 203 can be shifted on the fly. Even with that (the NP 203) I suggest slowing down to shift, and not under accelleration. Though the decal on the sunvisor says it’s ok to shift at speeds below 55 mph. ~Chuck www.chuckschevytruckpages.com – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >Thanks Big Chris great help!! > You lock the hubs before you get into 4Hi.  You can lock the hubs any time > before (assuming they are stock) you want to go into 4wheel drive.  I > suggest you don’t leave them locked without being in 4wheel drive, as it > wears parts faster, and cuts down on your gas mileage.  I don’t know the > specifics of shifting into 4wheel drive in your truck, whether it is shift > on the fly or not.  I think it is, but don’t quote me on that.  Often, on > the back side of one of the sun visors there is a sheet about your 4×4 >glued > that will give you some instructions.  If not, get a owners manual. > : Thanks for the info. HELLO, I’ve recently bought this truck and never having a 4×4 before am not sure how to shift properly. It’s an automatic with manual locking hubs; 2 wheel, 4 wheel low and 4 wheel high shifter. Any help is greatly appreciated.                 Thanks, Andy

Andy, why don’t you tell us what kind of vehicle it is, as there are small variances between types and models.  for most to get into 4Lo you need to stop the vehicle (the manuals say under 3 mph, but really just stop) put the truck in neutral (gear shift on steering column), then slowly switch from 4Hi to 4Lo (and be gentle, as sometimes it takes a little work to get it in).
