4×4 Vent
Question:
> i changed the gear oil pryer to all this. > the oil level is to the bottom of the fill hole.
Just a thought……IF you refilled with synthetic gear oil, the FULL level is somewhat below the threads. Don’t remember how far below. Dave

Since there is only one actuator motor to engage the front right axle shaft, as on the Dodge 4×4 I’m assuming that these Chevy’s use a right axle disconnect, to disengage the front diff from the front right wheel. What this does is allow the spiders to rotated around the right side case gear, while being driven by the front left axle, which does not get disconnected. That means the spiders are always rotating while the vehicle is in motion. In real cold weather, there is enough to also rotate the ring gear and front drive shaft till the oil warms up. Since they are in a oil bath, it does not cause noticeable wear, doing this just saves them money.. Ford did use manual or auto-locking hubs which disconnect both front axles from the front diff.. I have manuals on my 91 f250, right axle disconnect on my 2001 1500 Dodge and I assume the same for my 2002 2500HD Silverado.. setup looks similar to the dodge. JJ

I have a 93 gmc seirra 5.7 4×4 The vent hose which connects to front axil oil pan and runs forward up the frame and ends at the front driver side of the truck, leaks oil. it has some type of plastic valve or stop in the end of the hose, which i replaced. i put a new hose and clamp on. it still continues to leak out about 16 ounces a month. i took the end of the house and put it in a coke bottle to see if thats where it was really leaking from. i changed the gear oil pryer to all this. the oil level is to the bottom of the fill hole. and i noticed it leaks more on fast highway trips. i dont know what else to do but keep it in the coke bottle and drain it reguarly. Hope someone can solve this one ,i cant ,thanks

The gear oil you used may be foaming, I would suspect this if it happens mostly at high speeds. It’s also the only thing I can think of that would allow the oil to fill the open space in the diff and force oil up the vent tube. The fact it started after you changed the gear oil would also point to this as the cause.Sine you said it was not overfilled. JJ

Perhaps at high speed a vacuum is sucking it out, is it pointed to the rear? You may want to re-route the line straight up into the engine bay, the ‘73-’87’s have them straight up agaiast the rad support, the cap ends up near the Rad cap.
