I have a 2001 Ext Cab LT, 5.3L, Automatic, 2WD, with about 1500 miles so far. Here are some readings:    Road trip, 60-70MPH, empty, 21MPG.    Road trip, 60-70MPH, towing 2000# boat, 18MPG.    Mixed city/road miles, empty, 16MPG. Hans Before you buy.

Response:

I find it strange how some people get "good mileage" from their vehicle. My 2000, Silverado, quadcab, 2500, 2X4, 6.0, 4.10 now has approx 2000 miles on it. Highway driving 60 MPH cruise control gives me 13 MPG Towing a 30′ 5w 9000 pds gives me at 55 MPH between 8.2 to 10.4 MPG ( twisty mountain to flat highway ). I drive as smooth as I can trying to improve gas consuming because price of gas in fairly high here. ( approx. 2.00 $ US for a US gallon ) In Canada, we’re using liters and kilometers but all the above figures have been converted to US gallons and US $$$. Wish the truck would do better especially when not towing but I guess it’s the price you have to pay to get a vehicle powerful enough to tow confortably a 5w like ours.

Why ask about an engine option AFTER you’ve put the order in for the truck?  I think all that you just asked should have been asked before ordering the truck… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Ordered the 2500HD crew cab /Vortec 6000 v8 dealer insists nobody has figured > out the milage as of yet. chevy doesn’t post.  First pick-up looking for Pro’s > and con’s of vechicle. MY 6.0L has 32k miles and i average in town mid 10’s and at 80mph i get mid 12’s. i do have 4.10’s with the auto.  my buddy with 3.73’s get’s about 1 mpg better than mine with the 4.10’s. 99 gmc seirra 2500 slt 6.0l

RE/ >The difference has consistantly been about 8%.

That’s a pretty good match for what I’ve been experiencing compared to other (presumeably non-RFG users) people. Seems like the usual claim for the ‘burb is around 16 mpg.    16 * .92 = 14.7….just about what I get on the highway without my roof racks, rooftop box, surf ski, and windsurfers up there… Pete Cresswell

Just drove 3400 miles to Nebraska and back and averaged 17.  Cruise was set between 75 and 80, air on, and had a dirtbike and jetski in back. I was worried about mileage when I ordered the truck. My friend’s 6.0 gets around 11. But the mileage I get is acceptable. And it seems to be about normal for the driving I do. No jackrabbit starts, cruise 65-70, etc. I could get by with a 5.3L or even a 4.8L in the 2500, I rarely use more than 2500 rpm or 1/3 throttle. — Mike L 99 Silverado 1500 Base 4×4 4.8L 5spd 00 Silverado 2500 LS 4×4 6.0L 5spd Deadhorse, Alaska 6-6-99 Before you buy.

I’ve had the chance to measure the difference in milage between normal gas, and the RFG type. The normal gas gives about an 8% improvement in fuel  milage over the RFG type. This was done several times when I travel from my home, where RFG is required, to Northern Wisconsin, where normal gas is used. The trip is the same distance on the same roads each way…the only difference is that on the way back, I’ve got a tank of normal gas. The difference has consistantly been about 8%. Scott

about 1 mpg better with the 3.73’s   Is that so?  What is your RPM at 75 MPH >with 4.10’s?  How much MPH do you figure you loose between 3.73 and 4.10 (if >any)? >Do the new vortec’s want to run at higher RPMs?  I have a ‘98 5.7L now with >3.73 and it is under geared/powered pulling in the mountains.

with the 4.10’s i can run in second gear at 55mph at around 4000rpm. with that light of a trailer i would recommend 3.73’s. the advantage with the 3.73’s is you can go faster in the lower gears over the big hills. when towing i push my truck pretty hard the worst mileage i got on a trip was 7.96 on a 450 mile trip. i was pulling a trailer that weighed around 12000lbs in the mountains of montana.  i’m impressed with the truck it pulls the big hills at 30 mph which is pretty good. the only problems i had with my truck is the exhaust i’ve already had one replaced and my truck is going in for another one this week. it probably doesn’t help that i’ve been known to run my truck at 4500 to 5000 rpm for 10 miles up hill. i only wish my truck had stiffer overload springs on it. if you put over about 3000lbs on the truck it gives you instant high beams. at about 5000lbs the truck is on the rubber bumpers. . >Input here would be appreciated! >Charlie > I have a 2000 extended cab 4×4 with the 5.3 litre and 4.10 gear ration…I > have measured 17.8 mpg on the interstate at 75 mph without A/C.. > Mike

you must be doing something different than everybody else that has a 6.0l mine has 32k miles and i average in town mid 10’s and at 80mph i get mid 12’s. i do have 4.10’s with the auto.  my buddy with 3.73’s get’s about 1 mpg better than mine with the 4.10’s. but for you to get 16-17 that is out of the ordinary, at least according to the people i’ve talked to. Could any of the different milage experiences be related to different states requiring different gas additives?   I have a 2000 silverado LT extended cab 4×4, with the 5.3 liter engine, and your milage seems about right. I have gotten as high as 20mpg on the road, using NON reformulated gas. My milage drops about 8% with the RFG. Scott

Marty, You should be able to do better than that. My 4.8L averaged 15.5 with my camper on, and up to 22mpg without. I can pull 16-17 with the 6.0L 2500. Mike L 99 Silverado 1500 Base 4×4 4.8L 5spd 00 Silverado 2500 LS 4×4 6.0L 5spd Deadhorse, Alaska 6-6-99 Before you buy.
