2000 GMC
Question:
How do you disable the speed governor that won’t let me past 96 mph? Does this require a chip change and if so where can I find it?

You need a computer programmer such as the Hypertech Power Programmer. There are others but this is what I got after several frustrating bouts with my local dealer over the same issue. It plugs in to a connector under the dash and the process takes about 30 minutes. It swaps the information from the stock settings and stores them in the unit making it useless for anyone else and eliminating sharing the device. You’ll need to reset things back to stock when you take it to the dealer for engine service as they tend to reset things back to their default settings. I paid about $350.00 from a company in Texas and it included a 160 degree thermostat. I’ve had it for almost 2 years and 20,000 miles and I’m happy that I did it. It does several other performance enhancing adjustments as well and is handy if you change the tire size and need to adjust the speedometer and odometer. Don’t believe anyone that tells you that it voids the warranty. I spoke with an attorney before I got mine and he said that the only thing that would void the warranty would be to physically alter anything or be obviously abusive. The reason that I was given for the 96 MPH cut off was the tire rating but the factory tires on my 2000 1500 Z71 were rated at 112 MPH and the truck is capable of much more. I’ve got it set at 110 MPH and I still occasionally go over the line. Since my speedometer only reads to 100 MPH it’s the only indication that I’m going that speed. I like to drive fast and in Nevada we have many miles of straight open road with very little traffic. When I was researching my options, I got a lot of flames from people on this group who wanted to criticize the need to drive fast. I listened to their opinions and advice and then thought "Fuck em". Aside from resetting the speed limit, what other settings did you find useful.

I increased the speed that the gears shifted, stiffened the shifts similar to a shift kit, increased the maximum rpm, adjusted the fuel/air mixture and advanced the firing for 92 octane and several other minor adjustments that I can’t recall without looking at the manual. I immediately noticed a quicker response and shifts were harder and more positive. I did notice a small mileage increase but since the vehicle had less than 3000 miles, and was still breaking in, it was probably not the cause. I was already impressed with the vehicle as it was and only got the unit because of the speed limiter. I’ll admit that while I did notice the changes, they were relatively minor considering that this is a great vehicle from the start. The main thing that I do like is that when you are travelling, at any speed, and lay on the pedal it responds immediately with no hesitation and when you are accelerating fast, the higher shift point really makes a difference.
