1996 S10 pickup problems with engine????

Question:

An L35 is a High output 4.3L V6 with CPI and widely used in Chev and GMC truck lines, and carries the "W" identifier. Check the 8th digit of your VIN. This will identify your engine.

Thanks for giving me your opinions on this matter.  I will look around for the papers that the dealer gave me when I took the pickup in during the spring to try to find the original codes.  The dealer said they have one of the best technicians available for fixing this kind of engine, but from the get go it seemed that I had just as much idea what was wrong as the tech did.   Atleast the last couple times they started not charging me for everything they did trying to fix the pickup.  They said they couldn’t write too much off though because the pickup was past the warranty……and past 60,000 miles, where they said they could call back to the main company to get extra parts.    I said the problem started before 60,000 miles, but that wasn’t good enough for them (even though the pickup was taken to them originally around 59,000). The thing that gets me about the tires is that last winter was the third year I had used those tires on the pickup, with no previous problems. Also, most of the 96 S10’s did have 235’s on the 4X4’s (every one but mine that I’ve seen), but I guess mine has highway gears too. Also, anyone actually heard of the higher output engines referred to as "X" engines?  I know the 4X4’s come with an extra few horsepower, but never heard them called an "X" engine.  I think they are called L35’s or something.  I cant imagine that living in Idaho where I do they hadn’t seen another one of these four wheel drive 4.3’s like mine, but the dealer said it was the first engine they’d seen like it. Now my pickup has the little tires on it, 8000 more miles on it and the service engine soon light hasn’t come on since I pulled the snow tires. Thanks again for everyone’s help. Jason

GM Goodwrench Policy: "You only pay for the repair once" Obviously they fixed nothing. It is time to rattle the cages of the management. If your state has a lemon law- throw it in their face. Demand that you be compensated for parts/labor that you were charged for, but didn’t fix the problem. Ask the Service Manager why his technicians are untrained on this engine. They shouldn’t be working there if they don’t have the training credentials.

Chuck, You’re absolutely right about Jason needing to get things straight with the dealer. There are some real good OBDII mechanics out there but obviously none of them work at that dealer. I think you might be on to something. I’ve been told by my dealer’s service manager that OBDII vehicles will tolerate ONE tire size change up or down. I’m assuming from the way he said it that a two or more size difference wouldn’t fly. I have an idea. Jason, when you put your snow tires on and the problem re-occurs, take the truck to a dealer and have them read the code(s) for you. Make sure you tell them not to fix anything, just give you a copy of the codes. Post here again with the code(s) and be sure to put OBDII in the title of your post. I’ll bet that one of the OBDII wizards who frequent this board will be able to steer you in the right direction. Good luck! Dear Jason,      First of all I want you to know that I do not have any experience with anything that is computerized. I still have a 78′. A couple of thing stick in my mind, first when the dealer is charging for all this work and you are still having the problem means you are paying for services not rendered. I would like to make as a suggestion that you get the District Manager involved and tell them if the parts they are replacing is not fixing the problem, then put my old parts in.      The other thing that hits me is you said when you went back to the stock size tires everything was alright. My Mom had a 92′ S15 Jimmy and they started having weird problems when they went to a bigger tire. It was erratic stuff that no one ever found out what was wrong. They have sense traded it in so we will never know. What strikes me is the ABS. It has a flywheel like disc in the rearend. Now, if you go to a different size tire, the computer reads RPM and reads I do believe what the speedometer should read. Now, if I am right in my thinking the computer is saying to itself for example, I am do 2400RPM and should be doing 60MPH, so it send enough fuel for that given RPM, but then says wait a minute, my speedometer says I am going a different speed than I am and is confused so a Service Light appears.      I want you to please realize I am going off what my gut is telling me and never have dealt with a fuel injected, let alone a fully computerized vehicle. So, take what I say with a grain of salt. I just thought I would through my two cents worth in. Please keep us informed on how things turn out. Good luck. Regards, Chuck

Hi everyone, I hoped some people had some information for me and opinions about my pickup.  I have a 4X4, extended cab, 1996 S10 with AC and a 4.3 liter engine.  Last Feb. I went on a 500 mile trip and my service engine soon light came on and wouldn’t go off (it came on a couple times briefly before this).  OK,  ran fine for a few days until I got home then started missing so I took it to someone (not the dealer).  He had to change out all the emission stuff the computer said was bad…O2 sensor and EGR valve I believe.  That didn’t change a thing other than lightening my wallet.  I thought I’d better get it fixed so I took it to GM.  They said the computer said random misfire…same thing the other mechanic said.    First GM started by doing an engine flush…supposedly cleaning all the injectors and everything.  That didn’t fix anything…everytime I hit around 65-70 the light came right back on.  Next they started changing the $100 a set spark plug wires.  They thought that was it, but within a day the light came back on.   After that they tried flushing the engine again and that still didn’t fix it.   So, after flushing the engine twice they got the idea that one of the injectors were bad.  I asked how one of the injectors would make a "random" misfire but I guess they have their own logic.   They changed the one injector and the light still came on within a day. The last time I went in the service guy reset the light and said we could try again soon, but I ran out of money after $1100.  I changed the tires back to my summer tires that day…..the 75-205-15’s that came on it when I bought it.  The service engine soon light hasn’t been on since.  Now snow is nearing and I want to put my 75-235-15’s back on but am afraid somehow this could set off the computer again.  Could it?   Any ideas what is actually going on?  I haven’t told the dealer the light never came on after the tire swap.  They’ve tried to pass things off before on things I’ve done with my probably had a hood protecter, but I didn’t (they hadn’t seen it and it was still under warrenty). Other little notes of interest.  They told me some of the 2 wheel drives had similar problems because they reprogrammed the ABS…which wasn’t  but now is a recall (they haven’t touched mine yet).  The GM guy also said my pickup was the first they’d seen come in with an "X" engine.  He said mine had a special cam and was a higher output engine.  Do they make any special 4.3 "X" engine?  Thanks for your help and reading all this. Jason just take out the nospam in the address to email me.
