1994 or 1997 Suburban?

Question:

I had a 92 which I put 80,000 miles on and then got rid of it becuase it started to go bad.(mechanically the same as the 94) and now have a 96 with the Vortec.  Have 80,000 miles on the 96 and it has held up much better with the same usage.  96 is a much quieter and powerful truck.  Oh ya, both 1/2 tons. BUY THE 97.  Much better rig. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >I am considering purchasing one of these 2 Suburbans: >1994 Chevy Sub K1500 4×4 Silverado with 94,000 miles from a private >person from a classified ad. I am considering purchasing one of these 2 Suburbans: 1994 Chevy Sub K1500 4×4 Silverado with 94,000 miles from a private person from a classified ad. Price: around $13,000. Don’t know how it was used. 1997 GMC Sub K1500 4×4 SLT with 64,000 miles from a GMC dealer – with remainder of  75,000 mile warrantee, and the option to purchase an extended 3-year warrantee for about $900.  Price:  around $20,000 to $21,000. Which vehicle would appeal more to some of you out there? The 1994 has a great price, but the 94k miles scare me, plus there is no dealer involvement – any and all repairs would come out of my pocket. The 1997 has a much higher price than the 1994, but has 30,000 miles less, seems to be somewhat differently made, has dual airbags!, and dealer help in repairs, at least for the remainder of the original warrantee. Thanks in advance for any opinions, Captain Frank Before you buy.

You can find some further help at the following message forum: http://forums.vmag.com/suvsuburban0300/messages/2383.html I own a ‘94 Sub.  I have been happy with it. I checked at www.edmunds.com and www.kellybluebook.com and the 94 Sub looks like it has a lower price for the year.  Also the mileage is about right on for that year of vehicle while the 97 is running high. Things you may like about the 97 are the extra hp, newer styling and safety features. (I have been a little disappointed with some of the extras not found in my ‘94 Sub that I had even in a base version of a ‘95 Plymouth Voyager.) There have been some problems with transmission in the 96-97 model years. But then the transmission in the Sub I bought had also been replaced before I got it. I bought the 94 partially based on Consumer Reports rating of the Suburban for that year. It was the only year that they didn’t give the Sub a negative rating. I also like to purchase vehicles at the end of a certain style line rather than at the introduction of a new because I find they usually have all the kinks worked out by then. I was just in a ‘93 Sub the other day and noted that they have made some small functional improvements in the ‘94 model. One thing you should compare is whether the vehicle has been used for towing. My Sub didn’t appear to have been used for towing though I now use it for a 19′ trailer. It didn’t have a hitch and only had the 4-wire spade connector and so I knew it hadn’t been used for much towing if any at all. In general, I wouldn’t worry about the mileage difference between the two vehicles. The 350ci engine generally lasts well and so you should have plenty of more miles left. Mark
