Just an FYI… I have a 93 (Chevy) Z71 5.7L with 125k on it.  While I don’t use any oil, I did experience the recent pleasure of getting my transmission rebuilt.  The guy who did it for me told me that he’s done dozens of these GM trannies in the 120-175K range.  Apparently GM doesn’t handle the cooling of ATF well, and this causes quicker wear on the clutch plates.  When he did it, he put a transmission fluid cooler on for me that mounts to the front of the radiator. I’m certainly no expert, and I hope I didn’t get hosed, but it seemed to make sense to me.  If you’re thinking of buying, you may want to consider this.

I’m going to presume that you meant 1993 instead of 1973 in your last line… In 1993, standard issue on the 5.7L (350 cu.inch) gas V-8 was Throttle Body fuel Injection (TBI), which for all the world looked exactly like a carburator to the untrained eye until you removed the air cleaner and saw two fuel injectors sitting in the throat instead of jets.  If your neighbor has a 4-barrel carburator instead of TBI, it was either added on aftermarket or special ordered with the truck when new (although I’m not really sure that it was available even as a special order in ‘93).  Unless there is something else you are not telling us, there is no real reason to believe that the entire engine was replaced just because it has a carburator.  More likely just the TBI was replaced.  Your going to have to check engine block numbers to be sure.
