'01 Silverado possible heater core leak?

Question:

Kevin, Look at it another way….how much did you pay for that truck?   It’s still under warranty, let them fix it, and make ‘em fix it right. Tell them if it takes too long (you are the judge there, be reasonable, but more than 2 days is freakin nuts), you’ll call the owner and see what his opinion on it all is.  And if the owner isn’t worried/concerned over it, then the regional office for Chevy will be. Same goes for if they don’t do it right and things don’t work, it leaks, whatever.   I just took delivery on an ‘03 GMC.  I got a great deal (doesn’t everyone?  I mean, who admidts, "boy, they sure rammed it up my ass, but I bought it anyway").  But, if the heater core started leaking tomorrow, and they gave me the bushoff, I’d be screaming bloody murder for all to hear.  Someone’s ass would be grass.   I didn’t just dump a ton of money to have the service guys jerk me off. Kevin: That’s a  good sized job, 5.9 hrs. according to All Data, add .4 if you have the center console. Warranty only pays 4.2 hrs. which is why the Techs and SM hate warranty work. The core btw lists for$122.83. Good luck with it. Have a great one! The carpet is dry, pulled it up and checked the pad. I would say it is more like the foam gaskets and the passageways that have antifreeze in them. It doesn’t take much to smell. They said the HEPA filters were soaked so at least I got new ones out of the deal, but if they were soaked so was everything else.:(

Kevin’s Truck was under warranty and yes the carpet and pad needs replaced, contributory damages. District Mangers are helpful here. That price was GM ‘List’ for the part, which probably came from an outside vendor anyway. Have a great one! Sounds like your gonna need another core!  Or maybe learn to like the smell of coolant in the morning? $122 is a fairly expensive heater core.  I did one on a Ford F-150 and 5.9 hours wasn’t that far off. It took a little longer than that, closer to 8, with a friend and some beers. Anyways, had to take apart the whole dash and the heater core was like $40..  (Slightly discounted because I knew someone at a dealership.) 8 hours of work to replace a $40 part..  Fords, gotta love ‘em..  :-) Useful Tidbit: Dash disassembly to get to the heater core is a big project and a 1/4" Air Ratchet comes in exceptionally handy.  Although a small cordless drill with an adapter for 1/4" sockets would also work — don’t attempt the job without some sort of power tools. ‘01 truck — isn’t it still under warranty?

Isn’t that smell great. It probably is the antifreeze that soaked into the carpet. Since it was repaired under warranty, I’d complain and make them change out the carpet and padding, Otherwise it is just going to keep stinking and the dampness is no good for the steel in the floor or any cables or wires they ran under it. Well now I have a truck full of the stink of antifreeze and it fogs the inside of the windows almost immediately. Took it to the dealer, they have to tear the whole dash out to get at the heater core. How many other things won’t work when they get it back together is yet to be known. They asked, how big of hurry are you in to get it back?? That doesn’t sound good.

Kevin, Stop driving it until you take it in to the dealership as the more you drive it the more AF you’ll have on yer’ floor.  Like I said, the new GM trucks are not fun per way of changing the heater core.  The old ones <87′-95′> are a piece of cake, doesn’t take more than 2 hours or so if yer’ really being pokey.  Plan on them having it for a week.  As it’s still under warranty they should provide you with a loaner as well.  Whatever doesn’t work when you get it back can be fixed when you raise hell.  Don’t be too pessimistic, there are some real sharp mechainics at some dealerships.  Yes, I would never take an out-of-warranty vehicle to a dealership as they’re too expensive and slow as hell, but for a vehicle under warrenty, I’d trust them to do the job right. The heater core replacement isn’t pleasant on the newer style Silverado’s <was a piece of cake on the old body style w/ old HVAC system>.  If it’s under warranty, let em’ fix it.  If it stinks like hell afterwards, bitch up a storm!  If you’ve never done one on the newer-style trucks before, chances are you’d make more of a mess as a first-timer than the dealership guys who have probably done it MANY times already. Got off the interstate after 160 miles today, got gas started her back up and can smell antifreeze from the heater. Popped the hood, antifreeze at correct level. Engine not overheating, it is only 22 degrees outside too. Got back in the truck cranked the heat on high and really smells. The truck has 25k miles on it would the heater core be going bad already? Called the dealer and set up an appointment for Monday, it is under warranty but I really hate taking it in. How difficult is is to get at the heater core on these trucks. I have replaced one in a mustang and was a severe pain to get to it. I am scared if the dealer does so I will end up with antifreeze all over the carpet and have the eternal smell. Is there any easy way to get at it just in case it is a loose connection or something? Doc?
