'01 1500 SIlverado rear end oil chg

Question:

I am sorry for the incorrect info I gave earlier. The info I gave out was for the 99-2002 Ford F Series with the PowerStroke motor. Please do not let this force you into thinking that I don’t know I am talking about. For the most part I do. Been doing the same line of work for 12 years and finally got my own shop.YEAH I make money now instead of making money for other people. Please though sir I highly recommend that you always get a second opion about services and repairs that a shop claims needs done. Also when you need work done, unless you have a warranty it is my advise to shy away from the dealers. I will quote a job to a person in writing for a job based on the same hours and same parts and then call the dealers on speakerphone and see how much the dealer charges for the same services and 9 out 10 times I got them beat by along shot without sacrificing service and I can usually get the vehicle out the same day…Not a plug to my shop just a friendly hint to save you money..Also check the local chapter of the BBB. Find members of them to do the work because if you have a problem the shop will be more likely to solve it per your standards or better. Brandon

What weight of mobil 1 gear oil, the traditional 80-90 weight or is there different weights for the newer rearends? I believe my owners manual had said to change it at 7500miles so I am overdue.

Response:

It only comes in 75W-90. Dean – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >What weight of mobil 1 gear oil, the traditional 80-90 weight or is there >different weights for the newer rearends? I believe my owners manual had said >to change it at 7500miles so I am overdue.

I showed this message to the service manager at McCarthy GMC here in Minneapolis.  He told me that there is absolutely no reason to change the fluid in the diff at 3000 miles.  Not true. jb

Dean, Do you have a Detroit locker on your burb and if so do you have any problem understeering/oversteering when it locks/unlocks in a turn in slippery conditions? I installed a lockright in the wifes 87 K5 and after a few days driving she refused to drive the truck unless I put the open carrier back in. ( I couldn’t find a factory posi in the boneyard). Anyone want to buy a slightly used  Lockright rear diff cheap? It will need new pins & springs cuz I was kinda pissed when I changed it back out. 10 bolt rear. Also have a spare open carrier with ring gear(41 tooth) from a set of 3.42’s Kinda heavy to ship though.. — Tips, Tweaks, Help Forum Computers & Kits http://www.acon-pchelp.com

Response:

Yes, in my 14 bolt FF axle. I’ve had them in every truck I’ve owned the last 20 years or so. Frankly, I wouldn’t own a truck without one. The only driving technique I had to change was to ease into the throttle when turning from a full stop (easier on the tires!). I live in a place where we plow snow 6 months a year and I do a fair amount of off-road driving as well. The only thing that might get the uninitiated into trouble is laterally traversing a slippery hillside. The secret of course is to maintain an even throttle and if the rear end does start to slip downslope tap the brakes to re-establish traction. I’ve driven "positraction" equipped cars in packed snow and ice conditions and found it very unsafe. All the constant clutching caused the rear end to swerve even on flat roads. The DL is always locked (except when turning of course) and does not have any tendency to swerve on its own. People with short wheelbase trucks like Jeeps have told me that they experience some understeer with a DL but in a long wheelbase truck, I’ve never experienced it. Have you check the rear end"diff" on your truck since you owned it …? A TSB (technical service bulletin) I get monthly states that most rear ends where under filled at the factory so check it out . Ok GM as I understand it ship k1500,k2500,k3500 with a synthetic diff fluid from the factory and the first change needs to be done at 3000 miles. Then they recommend in severe service conditions to change fluid every 30k(I believe this is true, I do not have the book in front of me) As far a synthetic fluid if it has it in there from the start then GM should cover it under warranty. If not and you still have a warranty I would use what your owners manual says to use or you might have allot of problems it you rear end goes south.. Response:

Use Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube. No need for any "friction modifier". With that G80 Eaton POS you might want to change it every 15k, definitely at 15k if you tow. FWIW, if you order a truck w/o the G80, you can install a Detroit Locker which will last longer than any part on the rest of the truck. Response:

My 2002 manual does not list a "change diff oil" maint item, only check/add fluid. synthetic fluid should be good for 200K like that used in the 6-speed trans, which has a change interval of 200K I change mine about every 50K.     depends mostly where/how you drive it.. JJ

I have 16K on my ‘01 and am probable way overdue for the rear end oil change. I have the limited slip and am wondering what an approved (by GM) aftermarket oil is good to use and do I need a friction modifier etc.? I have read previous posts about $80 gear lube and wonder if anyone can help point me in the right direction since I do my own maintenance. I definitely want to use a synthetic. Thanks in advance.
