I’ve owned two vehicles with the 4.3, a 94 AWD Astro, and a 97 AWD Astro. The engine performed well in both , and I encountered few problems. The only problem that both shared was a failed alternator. I had to have both replaced, luckily while it was still under warrenty. Scott

I have a 1990 GMC Jimmy S-series with a 4.3. The truck now has 267,000 miles on it and the only two things I’ve replaced on it was the flywheel and water pump and I’m still getting 20 MPG on the highway

thanks for all the info!!! ID Before you buy.

I work as a driver for UPS and when the 4.3 came out a couple years ago they started replacing the engines in our delivery trucks with them. They must be good, cause those trucks take a beating!

Just traded a 95 Blazer with that engine. However, it was an automatic 4×4 drive. It had 145,000 miles on it. I had no problems with it and the dealer who bought it, said it was the best running 95 he had ever seen. (Oh, I had replaced the air conditioner (compressor), about a year ago.) > I’m looking at trading for a 91 short box with a 4.3 L V6 and a 5 > speed. > Before you buy.

I had a 93 S10 with the 4.3.  It was a good strong engine for that size truck, but might be a little flimsy in a full size pickup.  Gas mileage was less than I thought it ought to be, but the motor seems durable and trouble free.  Used it to pull a boat, never babied it, and my son is still running it at around 150K miles. My fuel economy sucks on the four 4.3’s that I have had – I get the same fuel economy out of my 98 Yukon that I do out of my 98 Envoy. jed

I have not owned a 4.3 full size but have heard they are not reliable from a neighbor that had one.  his was carburated though and did poorly on gas milage (15mpg or worse in a 2wd, auto). same motor as the Chevy V-8 350 minus two cylinders, so yes it is a good and proven motor.  Known problems:  Valve seals begin to leak over time and this causes a bit of oil to leak into the chamber, especially as it sits over night.  This causes a puff of smoke on start-up, but then goes away shortly. If that puff doesn’t go away it’s more than valve seals and there are problems.  As for things to look for: Check all the steering/suspension components, as you can sink a lot of $$$ in those around 100,000 miles depending on it’s care.  Check also the brakes, hoses and all other things you’d check on buying a new vehicle. — Big Chris mrclm at yahoo.com If God is good,  and God gives us life, then life must be good even if we don’t particularly like it. -Rich Mullins

I don’t know if the S-10 4.3 is the same or not,but I have 212,000 on mine and the only work I’ve done to it is replace the ‘O’-ring on the oil filter attachment. I’ve replaced the water pump, hoses and etc just to do it. This motor is awesome. It never gets babied, I push it hard every day.
